*Grade 2 Science and Technology*
*Energy: The Power to Do Things! 🚀*
Energy is everywhere! It's what makes things move, grow, and change. Think of
energy as the 'power' to do everything we see and do.

*Naming and Identifying Forms of Energy*
There are many different types, or forms, of energy. We can often see, hear, or
feel them!
1. Light Energy ☀️: This is the energy that helps us see things. The Sun is our
biggest source of light energy! We also get it from things like light bulbs and
flashlights.
2. Sound Energy 🎶: This energy helps us hear things. Sound is made when things
vibrate (shake quickly). When you ring a bell or clap your hands, you are making
sound energy.
3. Heat Energy 🔥: This is the energy that makes things warm or hot. We feel heat
from the Sun, a cozy heater, or a warm cup of milk.
4. Movement Energy 🏃: This is the energy of things that are moving. A rolling
ball, wind (which is moving air), and a running person all have movement energy.
This type of energy is also called Kinetic Energy.
5. Stored Energy 🔋: This is energy that is waiting to be used. Think of a
battery waiting to power a toy, or the energy in an apple waiting to power your
body. This is also called Potential Energy.

Discussing Different Forms of Energy
• The Sun gives us two very important kinds of energy: Light Energy (to see)
and Heat Energy (to stay warm).
• To make Sound Energy, something has to shake! If you touch your throat while
talking, you can feel your vocal cords vibrating to make sound.
• The food we eat, like an apple, has Stored Energy. When we eat it, our body
changes that stored energy into Movement Energy so we can run and play, and Heat
Energy to keep us warm.

Discussing Uses of Energy
We use energy every second of every day!
• We use Light Energy to read books, find things in the dark, and see where we
are going.
• We use Sound Energy to talk to our friends, listen to our teacher's
instructions, and enjoy music.
• We use Heat Energy to cook our yummy food, dry our wet clothes, and keep our
houses warm in the winter.
• We use Movement Energy to travel from place to place, play sports like
soccer, and turn the blades of a windmill.
• Stored Energy is the most important—it keeps us alive! The food we eat gives
us the energy to live and breathe, and batteries give energy to the toys and
devices we use.
