Basic of analysis + extra Q’s

First scene is (often) the most important bc it sets the mood and the theme of the film ~~
sometimes connected to the overall message

Extra Q’s:

- Q1: What is the name of the shot that’s used to effectively show that the character has
trauma of water in the film Shutter Island?

A1: Pont of View , POV shot ( the close up helps)

- Q2: Which of the two film genres can you effectively use LOW-KEY LIGHTNING
technique surrounding the characters?

A2: horror films and romantic films> bc it sets the mood

- Q3: The below are the descriptions of the camera technique LONG TAKE:
everything is in a continues shot, uninterrupted take, one scenes-one cut, way longer
then the conventional editing pace, could last several minutes, could incorporate
camera movements ( lots of dialogue, no privacy, makes things look more realistic,
one person leaves one one person comes in)

A3: in the test I will have to choose the description that’s NOT correct from the things he lists

- Q4: What is the name of the shot or style in filmmaking that’s used when the location
plays an important role surrounding the characters? ( especially in reality films)

A4: DEEP FOCUS – everything is the frame is in focus

Minari: best supporting actress award Yoo Jun ?

- Korean vs Hollywood>>> its Hollywood unlike the promotions
- Director Steven Yeun (?)
- Korean, koean-american actors, the language is Korean
- so why is it a Hollywood film? >> standars>> Plan B production company (the owner
Brad Pitt)>> it’s where the founding comes from and that’s what makes it Hollywood

first scene: conflict between the couple (Hollywood ending, come together and make up)

first shot> close- up of the son since its based on the director’s true experience, it is the young
director(repress.)

he is born in America to Korean parents

its his life experience, in his perspective

then the opening shot goes on, the man is driving a moving truck, the wife follows behind him
driving the car with his son in it, she doesn’t know where she is going, she is just following
her husband, wherever he is driving>>

>> the husband, we don’t even see him, why? bc for him its not a surprise, he knows where
they are going, but she doesn’t know, even tho she should

>> this is a clear description of their relationship and the situation they are in> stubborn,
conservative man, she just follows around, the power balance is tilted and its clear>> and
from this point the conflict grows bc of the husband’s characteristics

LOOK AT EVERY LITTLE GESTURE

wife refuses the husbands help, to hold his hand, as she climbs into the lakókocsi > why>>
even though it’s harder this way >> it tells us about her life being married to this dude,
>OBEY>> that shapes her self-esteem > I can do this myself> she follows everything he tells
her, so she tries to do her best todo anything she can on her own> shows her backstory, what
she goes through in this marriage

crying part> she covers her eyes and/or turns around when arguing with the husband ( and
crying/having strong emotions)> she cried so much she doesn’t want to show her tears
anymore, she is done with it, also self-esteem , doesn’t want to appear weak

Other movie: about true events, main ch. goes to N. korea as a spy to see the state of their
nuclear weapons

first scene> fishing, matches with the overall theme of the film>> he is a spy y he has to keep
quiet > bait and hope they bite, the same as he is about to do as a spy

first and last scene connection>> last scene he has fish on his tie

WHEN THERE IS CONNECTION BETWEEN THE FIRST AND LAST

SCENE THAT’S A GOOD MOVIE

LA La Land: opening scene> LONG TAKE: ONE SCENE, ONE CUT

>> important theme>>it’s a musical> to feel like you are watching a real musical > no
editing> feels like the opening number on stage > bc of what the chs are doing, falling into
choreography> helping each other out> which is the message of the film> if we help one
another everything is possible

camera movement> dancing along with the characters

colours>> 3 IMPORTANT > red , green, blue> we can see all of the in the opening scene
opening scene finishes up with the WIDE-ANGLE SHOT of location LA>> artists trying to
achieve their dreams > where all dreams come true and yet there is a lot of competition

Othe film- Intro- The Outlaws

Choi Dong Hoon ?

Ch intro> cast-face – ch. name, music> telling us, reinforcing, who is who> bc so many chs. >
nicknames, makes it easier to remember

its this directo style> likes to use slit screen, showing it from the beginning, like its a brand

scene>>> bath -house after restaurant> important> >the detectives and the gangsters run into
each other> the boss takes the cig out of the underlings mouth> they’ve known each other fo a
long time, close friends>>> IT’S IMPORTANT AS A DIRECTOR TO PAY ATTENTION
TO THE LITTLE BEHAVIORS/ DETAILS

POINT OF VIEW – P.O.V SHOT>> where are looking at what the character is looking at>
this creates tension> also shows the characters thinking>> usually starts with a close up of the
character> then a shot of wat they are looking at

this shot in this scene also shows the directors research> what the bad guy notices, how he
knows they are detectives>> sneakers for better running, diary> this tells us about both chs bc
that’s what a detective looks like and the mafia guy knows that > DETAILS >>> GOOD
DIRECTING> MINIMISING THE DIALOGUES> SHOWNG BEHAVIOUR OVER
DIALOGUE

DOLLY SHOT > not zoom, physical movement of the camera > to create tension and to
intensify the emotions

>> followed by a REACTION SHOT> POV > DOLLY >> 3 tension (shots?) > they stand up
at the same time> cap tells the new officer to not do anything stupid> bc at the beginning of
the scene he was reading info about the bad guys and these ppl match the info

>> CHARACTER DISCRIPTION

the bad guy is also careless> bc he didn’t notice they are detectives> bc of the seating, he has
his back to them

next scene>> boss is inside somewhere we don’t know, looking at something we dnt know,
taking to a kid>> sometimes its good to hide information from the audience , about the ch and
in general>> it creates tension and suspense>> vica-versa sometimes the audience needs to
know more then the ch.s.

sound separate from scene, off screen

PARALLEL EDITING>> suspense, >> diff characters doing different stuff at different
locations BUT at the same time> doesn’t have to be explained , we can predict what happens
off screne>> showing less is better, more shocking
BROKER

Hiro K- C.J Ent. – ex doc, film maker, Cannes Award, Grand Prix Award

his style> realist, around family, adoption vs, biological parents

IUs first commercial film

crime- big picture film

Dialogue location

stealing the baby, the main characters > unethical> yet we have to root for them> they try to
sell the baby > so how to get the audience to root for them> there has to be something that
makes us love them> the director does it by?

Soo Gang Ho- main ch> he stole the baby, took him to his laundry shop> he is acting like
nothing happened > happy mood >> IMPORTANT TO SHOW A GOOD SIDE OF THE
VILLIANS > to show different sides of humanity >> he is a kind and nice guy > which makes
him lovable > even tho he commits crimes

>> HAVING 3D CHARACTERS MAKES A GOOD MOVIE > its realistic character
painting/portrayal

even though the main chs kidnapped the baby> they are trying to sell him to good parents>
that’s why the audience loves them> bc this way the babay wont go to an orphanage

money sharks are after the main ch. old guy

his car is bad and old, the trunks keep opening and they have to pull it closed with a rope>
trunk opening=repetition> will be important, pre shadowing

repetition combined with theme of the film can be the message of the film

the orphan broker> also abandoned by mom> hope his mother would return but she never
did> he is the grown up version of the baby

IU, the abandoning mother leaving the baby for a better home

mentioning the babies weird eyebrow> repetition

orpanhange owner> blood is thicker than water>> pessimist> blood related is more important
than adoption

Tuck scene, they are together, with old man, young man, IU, baby and football loving kid>>
people in the car have personal issues>> the get pulled over bc the trunk cant close, repetition

they are all very different yet somehow connected, the director raises the question- What is
the definition of family?
the rope on the trunk is symbolic , the title letters are all very different yet they are connected
by the rope on the runk>> there is a connection, they are family

there is a connection between people no matter where they come from

>> the main ch. owns a Korean style laundry, which means he also mends clothes ~ ~
mending relationships

Carwash incident scene> makes them laugh and start to open up, for example they star telling
each other their real names>> San Hyun is the name the main ch would have given his son if
he had one> connection to Hye Jin bc he wants to be his son, also Woo Sang HE the baby

Sun Ah> real name Moon Soon Young, why did she lie

the carwash scene is the happiest moment> the water represents cleaning them, washing away
the pain they felt (and lies?)> they all have scars inside (Dongso also has a physical scar)

Abortion (good/bad?) vs abandon > which is better> this kind of dilemma makes a good
character

IU was a prostitute, >the old mafia guy raped her violently, the baby is his,>so IU killed him>
the guys wife is after IU> she wants the baby

After the carwash scene, happiest moment>> comes a very dark scene, probably the
darkest>> and the contradiction makes it even darker, enhances the emotions

now its hard to reach their goals> whatever the goal is the ch should always have opsticles,
never easy > makes the story better

we know things the other chs don’t know

rain, wind> the weather is an important element in this film, umbrella !!

the police women and IU touch the rain, even in the beginning of the film they were in the
rain

police women talk to her husband on the phone bc she heard a song playing> ‘ remember that
movie we watched?’> magnolia, the song plays in that film> whats her issue

main ch teaching the football kid how to sew> connecting clothing like connecting ppl

main ch tells IU ‘ your button was about to fall off’> like their connection> bc she plans plans
to sell them out to the police

the real reason IU killed the mafia guy, father of the baby, is bc he tried to take him from her,
saying he should have never been born

Dong Soo ( young main ch) likes IU> he has connections With Hae Jin – football kid, and
Woo Song -baby>> he sometimes himself acts like a little kid
SH. old main ch, > knows one of the young mafia guys> he is the son of someone I know

lots of wind and rain> representing things moving and changing

they run away on a train to the ocean, but IU tells the police about where they are going

train scene>> SH. – its not too late

IU. - morago?

SH- nothing.

 dark tunnel, lights keep going out, what do they say in the dark?

ocean> Hae Jin> means going to the sea >> Woo sung > stars

stars and sea ~ adoption?

Scene> buyer lady breast feeding WooSong> while she does that we don’t see IUs face, we
get a back shot of her >> we don’t know her emotions, she is the most mysterious ch

strange to see other ppl breastfeeding the kid

adoption is just as valuable

Woolmido- bus>> the fb kid points out the monorail, IU looks at it> but the next shot is not
the monorail but the y guy looking at IU

the kid is happy to see some kind of fair>> ferris wheel> but turns out he is scared of hights>
suddenly he is scared , but he was thee one who wanted to go in the first olace>> this scene
represents hope that was crushed

>> his hope of finding family> bc it looked fun> yet he is not having fun

>> what is hope ? -director

like Dong SOO hoped her mother will come back but she never did>> hope doesn’t always
work out

side note: the aerial shot here is similar to the train shot, its like they are up above in the sky

on the ferris wheel the kid is paired with SH. and IU, the baby, DS together

>> he talks about why don’t we raise the baby together>> “ I will forgive you instead
(of my mom)” >> he covers her eyes>> so she can cry in private? he cant face her?>>

>they look like a couple but he is also the grown up version of Woosong

Sooyoung is the most mystical ch. so DS. kind of becomes her spokesperson > telling the
audience what might be in her mind > you abandoned him wo he wont grow up as a
murderers son> he covers her eyes bc he is the one to tell us and bc she is the ch who always
wants to hide her feelings and he knows that>> you don’t have to tell me/show me what you
feel bc I know

shot of police women in the car, the older (saejin?) – “ Iguess I wanted to sell him the most”

the younger police womens name is never mentioned>> sometimes the names are very
important

SH. with his real daughter>> “we don’t need money just pls stop callin”> the mom thru the
daughter

mom is having a baby boys with her new husband>> SH- but im still your dad right d- really?
>> SH is also hoping to reunite with his exwife and daughter>> but his hope gets completely
crushed > he mentions the cable car> holding onto the last crumbs ( like the heart shaped
straws also represent>> but its too late>

>> when he loses hope> his eyes go dead and he becomes desperate and desolated>
controlled and supressed emotions> EMOTIONAL CURW -how much emotion you are
giving as an actor

“- Soo Young you never talk to WOO Song”>> “ say it to all of us”> DS.” lets turn off the
lights”> she tells all of them one by one ‘ thank you for being born’>> deep down they all
really needed that but SH. acts weird,he feels awkward? the scar is too fresh?

Hye Jin also tells IU thanks for being born>> all of them are so broken

next scene IU and o p w Sae Jin in the car, she offers IU a deal /way so she can raise
WooSong herself>> IU wants better future for him

in the end police women raises WOO song for 3 years >> when IU gets let out of prison and
so does the younger guy?>> and they arrange a meeting between everyone> but we don’t
know who actually shows up or who end up raising WOO song> we see IU run but we don’t
know where>> we see the old truck with the group/family photo in it but we don’t know who
is driving it

the picture in the truck is also moving, just like the wind it symbolises change

their connection in the end ended up unstable, we don’t really know whats gonna happen next,
its all shaky, the ups and downs of life

SH: lost all the hope he once had > CHARACTER CHANGE>> he doesn’t care about
anything anymore, he deatteches from the family> doesn’t want to brng them down?> so he
decides to work with the gang?

The film starts with SaeJin and ends with her> her role was really big, she put the baby in the
baby box> now she is raising the baby> irony> her opinion about the other chs changes

rainy> at the end sunshine

rain in the movie > IU tells DS come pick me up with an umbrella> but that never happens bc
IU has to overcome everything on her own >> reality vs fantasy> if u don’t have an umbrella
u gon get wet

>> the beginning> rain> fresh start and life <<>> at the end feeling the baby ~~ feeling the
rain = connection

Dong SOO not only talks for IU but also points out the message of the director

he also goes thru ch change, starts to really care for the baby

Extra notes: on the train>> SH –‘ I had a dream’ >> seems like a good one but it wasn’t>>
going to woolmido with wife and daughter, which he is now doing with his new “family”>
should be happy>> yet it’s the hope that in the end doesn’t turn out good>> reality is different
from dreams

train> the screen goes black when the ch.s. are trying to hide their feelings >> SH. says uh
never mind> bc he is not sure if he can take responsibility for what he said>> moral dilemma

DILEMMA IS ALWAYS GOOD

Sh. is the button that fell off in the end

younger police women> doesn’t have a name> she is the voice of reason for the audience> the
most objective one

Dong SOO is the voice of the director

IU goes through a bad time emotionally > we can see that the camera is not straight>> metal
barriers>> all of this represents her bad time

the main ch clears the bayb “ now you are really clean”> ge is always linked with cleaning
stuff

when the ch.s are shown very small small compered to the place they are in, it shows and
proves their vulnerability >> classic camera shot

something pushes the olice women to change when she finds about IU and the rape

there is at least one reason for everything said by the characters
