Solid Conductors Dimensions, Resistance and Weights

American Wire Gauge
The American Wire Gauge (AWG) system is defined by pinning the value of 36 AWG to 0.005 inch. All the other AWG values are
derived from this definition. A useful way to estimate a wire dimension and resistance is by noting that an increase of 3 AWG
units halves the wire cross-section area and doubles the resistance.

Resistance Formulas

Conductor resistance, R (Ω): L where ρ is copper resistivity (=1.0001122 (Ω.mm2)/m)

R=ρ L is the conductor length in m
A A is the conductor cross-section area in mm2

A general expression for the resistance as a function of temperature is

Rt = R20 [1 + α (t − 20)] where Rt is the resistance at temperature t°C

R20 is the resistance at temperature 20°C
α is 0.00393 for copper
t is the conductor temperature in °C
