Reproduction
Reproduction is the biological process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their
own kind, ensuring the continuation of their species. It can occur through sexual or asexual
methods depending on the organism.
Sexual Reproduction
Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote. It results in
offspring with genetic variations, as traits are inherited from both parents.
Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction involves only one parent, producing offspring that are genetically identical to
the parent. It occurs through processes like budding, fission, fragmentation, and regeneration.
Fertilization
Fertilization is the process of fusion between the male gamete (sperm) and the female gamete
(egg) to form a zygote, which later develops into a new organism.
Regeneration
Regeneration is the process by which some organisms can regrow or reproduce lost body parts.
For example, hydra and starfish can develop complete organisms from a part of their body.
Pollination
Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther (male part) to the stigma (female part) of a
flower, enabling fertilization and the production of seeds.
Self-Pollination
Self-pollination occurs when pollen from the anther of a flower is transferred to the stigma of the
same flower or another flower on the same plant, leading to fertilization.
Cross-Pollination
Cross-pollination occurs when pollen from the anther of one plant is transferred to the stigma of a
flower on another plant of the same species, increasing genetic diversity.
Fission (Binary and Multiple)
Fission is an asexual reproduction process where a parent cell divides into new individuals. In
binary fission, it divides into two, and in multiple fission, it divides into many offspring.
Gestation Period
The gestation period is the time between fertilization and birth during which the embryo develops
inside the mother’s womb. In humans, it usually lasts about nine months.
Implantation
Implantation is the process where the fertilized egg (zygote) attaches to the wall of the uterus and
begins to develop into an embryo for further growth.
Gonadotropins
Gonadotropins are hormones secreted by the pituitary gland that control the functions of the
gonads (testes and ovaries), including the production of gametes and sex hormones.
Placentation
Placentation is the process of formation and attachment of the placenta in the uterus, which helps in
the exchange of nutrients, gases, and wastes between mother and developing embryo.
