Introduction
Consumers play an important role in the market. They buy goods and services for use, but
sometimes sellers exploit them. To protect consumers, the Consumer Rights and
Consumer Protection Act (COPRA) were introduced.
Consumer and Consumer Movement
Consumer: A person who buys goods or services for personal use, not for resale or
commercial purpose. Consumer Movement: A social movement that seeks to protect
consumer interests through legislation and public awareness.
Need for Consumer Awareness
Consumers were often exploited by adulteration, underweight goods, high prices,

Consumer Protection Act (COPRA)
Enacted in 1986, amended in 2019. It set up Consumer Dispute Redressal Agencies at
three levels – District, State, and National Commissions.
