are domestic servants, learning to read.
This is no non-formal education centre. Education is a very
serious business here. The girls get to write their public exams,
some of them join residential schools (after clearing the entrance
exams) and some others go for higher studies.
Innovative teaching methods help these first generation
learners. Field trips, discussion on current events are common
features in this school.
Anand Bharti is not just about education, many people have
commented that the children here are transformed into
confident individuals and that the values imbibed here stay with
them wherever they go.

Dr. Gopal paused again as if to recall to his mind the scene in the
operation theatre then and continued. “I could see the mischief in Narang’s
eyes as he uttered some unflattering words and pointed towards the
illuminated viewing box at the far end of the operating room. “Those are
her pre operative x-rays. Study them! then study her case file too! After
that I will consider kicking you for calling me a murderer. “
“I gazed at the radiographs,” Dr. Gopal continued,” one of those showed
long, horizontal, straight ‘air fluid level” in the upper abdomen, suggesting
that there was a large quantity of fluid and free gas present in the abdominal
cavity. Normally, gas is present only in the stomach and intestines, and
escapes into the abdominal cavity to form ‘free gas’ whenever there is a
perforation in the bowel or stomach. Thus, it seemed that this patient
already had such a perforation. But Narang had said that he had perforated
the stomach. It was all very perplexing. I badly needed some strong coffee
to help me think better, so I took the case file to the surgeon’s lounge.

face towards him. Their eyes met for a moment and the man scowled. The boy
felt scared and looked at his mother. His mother hadn’t opened her eyes. Her
face was filled with a beauty and pleasure that the boy had never seen before.
She stood, wrapped in the man’s arms, her lovely face thrown back and her
lustrous black tresses falling down like coiled snakes, kissing her waist. ‘Run,

apparent that with a majority of working women the family is more important
than the job. They prefer to stay in joint families where their children can be
taken care of while they are at work. When they come back in the evenings from

Lencho showed not the slightest surprise on seeing the money; such was his
confidence- but he became angry when he counted the money. God could not
have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.
Immediately Lencho went up to the window to ask for paper and ink. On the

to open it. It said "God: of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached

On the day of the inauguration, I was overwhelmed with a sense of history. In
the first decade of the twentieth century, a few years after the bitter Anglo- Boer
war and before my own birth, the white-skinned peoples of South Africa patched
up their differences and erected a system of racial domination against the dark-
skinned peoples of their own land. The structure they created from the basis of
one of the harshest, most inhumane, societies the world has ever known. Now, in
the last decade of the twentieth century, and my own eighth decade as a man,
that system had been overturned forever and replaced by one that recognized the
rights and freedoms of all peoples, regardless of the colour of their skin. That day

Passage-3
It was this desire for the freedom of my people to live their lives with dignity and
self-respect that animated my life, that transformed a frightened young man
into a bold one, that drove a law-abiding attorney to become a criminal, that
turned a family-loving husband into a man without a home, that forced a life-
loving man to live like a monk. I am no more virtuous or self-sacrificing than the
next man, but I found that I could not even enjoy the poor and limited freedoms
I was allowed when I knew my people were not free. Freedom is indivisible: the
chains on anyone of my people were the chains on all of them, the chains on all
of my people were the chains on me.
I knew that the oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed. A
man who takes away another man's freedom is a prisoner of hatred.

Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only
