Class 10 – Mathematics Sample Question Paper

Maximum Marks: 80
Time: 3 Hours
General Instructions:
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. Use of a calculator is not permitted.
3. Figures are not drawn to scale.

Section A (1 mark each)


1. Find the HCF of 65 and 117 using Euclid’s algorithm.
2. If α and β are the zeros of polynomial p(x) = x² - 5x + 6, find α + β.
3. Write the first term of the A.P. whose nth term is 7n - 3.
4. Solve for x: 2x + 3y = 12, x - y = 1 (only substitution setup).
5. A point P(x, 2) is equidistant from Q(–2, 5) and R(3, –4). Find x.
6. Find the distance between the points (–3, –4) and (0, 0).

Section B (2 marks each)


7. The LCM and HCF of two numbers are 84 and 21 respectively. If one number is 42, find the
other.
8. Find the roots of the quadratic equation: x² - 7x + 10 = 0.
9. A shopkeeper buys pencils at Rs 3 each. He marks them at Rs 4 and allows a discount of 5%.
Find his profit %.
10. A train travels 60 km at a speed of x km/hr. If its speed were 6 km/hr more, it would take 15
minutes less. Find x.
11. In ∆ABC, DE ■ BC intersects AB at D and AC at E. If AD/AB = 3/5, find the ratio of areas of
∆ADE and ∆ABC.
12. Find the coordinates of the centroid of a triangle with vertices (–1, 3), (3, 1), (2, –4).

Section C (3 marks each)


13. Use Euclid’s lemma to show that the square of any positive integer is of the form 3m or 3m + 1.
14. Obtain all zeros of 2x³ + x² - 5x + 2, given that –2 is one zero.
15. Solve for x: 1/(x+2) + 2/(x+3) = 3/(x+4).
16. A sum of Rs 700 is to be used to give 7 cash prizes. Each prize is Rs 20 less than the preceding
one. Find the value of each prize.
17. The sum of the first 7 terms of an A.P. is 49 and that of the first 17 terms is 289. Find the first
term and common difference.
18. A train travels 360 km at a speed of x km/hr. If its speed were 5 km/hr more, it would take 48
minutes less. Find x.
19. ∆ABC ~ ∆DEF, AB = 6 cm, DE = 9 cm, area of ∆ABC = 36 cm². Find area of ∆DEF.
20. A motorboat, whose speed is 18 km/hr in still water, takes 1 hr more to go 24 km upstream than
downstream. Find speed of stream.
21. If roots of a quadratic equation are 2 and 3, form the quadratic equation and solve to verify.
22. A two-digit number is such that the product of its digits is 12. If we add 36 to the number, the
digits interchange. Find the number.

Section D (4 marks each)


23. A number when divided by 12 leaves remainder 5, and when divided by 18 leaves remainder 9.
Find the least such number.
24. Divide 2x■ - 3x³ + 3x² - 5x + 2 by x² - 2x + 1.
25. Solve the pair of equations: x + y = 5, 2x - 3y = 4 by elimination method. Also, find intersection
point.
26. The sum of the first 30 multiples of 7 is to be calculated. Find it.
27. A passenger train takes 3 hours less than a goods train to travel 132 km. If the goods train’s
speed is 11 km/hr less, find their speeds.
28. A ladder 10 m long reaches a window 8 m above the ground. Find distance of foot from wall.
Also find sinθ, cosθ.
29. The following table shows wages of 50 workers. Draw histogram: Wages (Rs): 0–50, 50–100,
100–150, 150–200, 200–250 Workers: 5, 10, 20, 10, 5
30. Find the ratio in which y-axis divides line segment joining A(–1, –5) and B(5, –1). Also, find
coordinates of division point.
