1 Read the passage and write the summary of it. Suggest a suitable title to your summary.
The humble son of a farmer from Sarakkalvilai villagen in Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district, Dr. K. Sivan as
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chairman was leading the Chandrayaan-2 mission to moon. Sivan
studied in a Tamil medium government school. After graduating from S. T. Hindu College in Nagercoil, Sivan
completed a Master’s in Engineering from IISC in 1982. In 2006, he received Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering from
IIT Bombay. Sivan is the first graduate in his family. His brother and two sisters were unable to complete higher
education due to their poverty. ‘‘When I was in college, I used to help my father in the field, That was the reason he
got me admitted in a college near our house.’’ Sivan told TOI, ‘‘Only when I had completed my [Link] (Mathematics)
with 100% marks his mind changed.”Sivan said he had spent his childhood days without a shoe or sandal. “I
continued wearing vesti (dhoti) till college. I wore pants for the first time when I entered MIT.” He joined ISRO
inn1982 and worked on almost on almost all rocket programmes. Before taking charge as an ISRO chairman in
January, 2018, he was the director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) which develops rockets. He is known
as ISRO’s ‘Rocket Man’.

in 1982 and worked on almost all rocket programmes. Prior to becoming ISRO’s chairman in 2018, he was the
Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre that develops rockets. No wonder, Dr K Sivan is known as ISRO’s ‘Rocket
Man’.

I refuse to accept that the world is so poor, when just one week of global military expenditure can bring all
the children to classrooms.
I refuse to accept that all the laws and constitutions, police and judges are unable to protect our children.
I refuse to accept that the shackles of slavery can ever be stronger than the quest for freedom. I REFUSE TO
ACCEPT here.
My only aim in life is that every child is free to be a child,
- free to grow and develop,
- free to eat, sleep, and see daylight,
- free to laugh and cry,
- free to play and learn,
- free to go to school, and above all,
- free to dream.
I have the privilege of working with many courageous people who have the same aim. We have never given up
against any threat or attack and we never will.
We have made progress in the last couple of decades. We have reduced the number of out-of school children
by half. We have reduced the number of child labourers by a third. We have reduced child mortality and
malnutrition, and we have prevented
millions of child deaths.
But, let us make no mistake, great challenges still remain.
Friends! The biggest challenge or biggest crisis knocking on the doors of humankind is fear and
intolerance.
We have utterly failed our children in imparting an education. An education that gives the meaning and
objective of life. An education that gives a sense of global citizenship among the youth.
I am afraid that the day is not very far away when the cumulative result of this failure, will culminate in an
unprecedented violence, and that will be suicidal for humankind.
Rights, security, hope can only be restored through education.

What is he not ready to accept? Why?
Ans He refuses to accept the world is unable to get the children into classrooms i.e. get them educated. He refuses
to accept that with all the rules and regulations children can not be protected. He also refuses to accept that
shackles of slavery are stronger than the quest for freedom. Children are the future citizens and their well being
would affect the country and the nation and the world at large. So, the first priority of the world should be free,
healthy and educated children. In the presence of rules, availability of money, when the children are not protected,
it is a lapse.
