Tutorial 03

Section A – Algebra

1) For the following problems give the line in vector form, parametric form, and symmetric
form.
(a) The line through the points (2, −4,1) and (0,4, −10).
(b) The line through the point (−7,2,4) and parallel to the line given by 𝑥 = 5 − 8𝑡, 𝑦 =
6 + 𝑡, 𝑧 = −12𝑡

2) Show that the line given by 𝑥 = 8 + 𝑡, 𝑦 = 5 + 6𝑡, 𝑧 = 4 − 2𝑡 and the line given by
𝑟 = 〈−7,3,14〉 + 𝑡〈12, −1,8〉 do not intersect.

3) (a) Find a parametric equation of the line passing through (5,2,0) and that is
perpendicular to the plane 4𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 2.
(b) Find an equation of the plane that passes through the point (6,0,0) and contains
the line 𝑥 = 4 − 2𝑡, 𝑦 = 2 + 3𝑡, 𝑧 = 3 + 5𝑡.

𝑥−2 𝑦−7 𝑧+2 𝑥+1 𝑦+2 𝑧−1

4) Evaluate the distance between the lines 4 = −4 = 3 and = = .

Section B – Real Analysis

1) Find the continued fraction expansion of 𝜋, 𝑒.

2) Show that ||𝑎| − |𝑏|| ≤ |𝑎 − 𝑏| for all 𝑎, 𝑏 ∈ 𝑅.
3) Show that there are infinitely many prime numbers.
4) Show that there is a rational number and an irrational number between any two real
numbers.

Section C – Integration and ODE

1) Solve the following differential equations.

1 𝑑𝑦 3
a) 𝑦 ⁄2 𝑑𝑥 + 𝑦 ⁄2 = 1; 𝑦(0) = 4
𝑑𝑦 1
b) 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 + 𝑦 = 𝑦 2

2) Solve the initial value problem,

𝑦 ′′ − 16𝑦 = 0; 𝑦(0) = 3, 𝑦 ′ (0) = −4.

3) Find the general solutions of the given second order differential equations.

b) 𝑦 ′′ − 36𝑦 = 0
c) 3𝑦 ′′ + 𝑦 = 0
4) Solve the initial value problem,
