DC Compound Generator Load Characteristics

The document outlines an experiment to determine the load characteristics of a DC compound generator, explaining the theory behind voltage drops and compensation using series fields. It details the required apparatus, procedure for conducting the experiment, and necessary precautions to ensure accurate results. The conclusion prompts analysis of field dominance in the generator and the effects of opening the shunt field on terminal voltage.

AIM: To determine the external characteristics (load characteristics) of a DC compound

generator.

THEORY:

The causes of voltage drop in the terminal voltage from no load to full load in a shunt generator
can be partially/ fully/ over- compensated by uses of an aiding series field (cumulative
compound), which can be connected in a long or short shunt compound generator. The aiding
ampere-turns of the series field automatically increase with the load, compensating the armature
voltage drop.

In level compound generator, full load voltage equal to no load voltage. Differential compound is
not used in practice as the terminal voltage falls off steeply with load. Long or short shunt
connection of series winding makes only a marginal difference in the VI characteristics of a
compound generator.

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

Sl. Particulars Specifications Quantity

No
1. DC motors Vs=220V, Ia=1.36A, Uf=200V, 1 set.
If=1.18A, P=300KW, rpm= 3000 min-1
2. DC generator Vs=220V, Ia=1.8A, Uf=180V, If=0.1A, 1 set.
P=300KW, rpm= 3000min-1
3. DC ammeter (0-2.5/5) Amps, Analog type. 3 nos.

4. DC voltmeter (0-250/500) V, analog type. 2 nos.

9. Load P= 3 ×400W, 220/38V ∆/Y 1 no.

CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:

PROCEDURE:

1. Collect all the required materials.

2. Make the connections as per the circuit diagram.
3. Verify the connection before giving the supply.
4. Adjust R1 and R2 i.e., R1=min and R2=max. R1 should be minimum so that high current
flows for easily starting torque and keep R2 at G side in maximum position so that current
can be controlled from minimum to maximum.
5. Run the motor and adjust its speed to the rated value of generator.
6. Adjust the field rheostat of dc shunt generator and make field current rated so that
terminal voltage flow to maximum, load step by step till rated load current by keeping
rpm same throughout the practical.
7. Then, change the load current by means of varying load. Loading rheostat to obtain rated
voltage and current.
8. Plot VL Vs. IL, and then obtain the external characteristics shunt generator.

PRECAUTIONS:

1. The speed of a generator should be maintained constant.

2. The field current should not exceed beyond its rating.
3. Only DC ammeter and voltmeter are used.
