Geochemical Graphing Software for Petrology

This document describes software programs that can be used to create geochemical graphs, including IgPet, Excel, GCDKit, Petrograph, and PetroPlot. It also mentions useful databases such as GEOROC, NAVDAT, and PETDB that contain geochemical data on rocks. The free program GCDKit stands out as a powerful tool capable of handling large amounts of data and creating various types of geochemical graphs.

Programs to create geochemical graphs

This list is intended to facilitate the representation of geochemical data to support the
teaching and research in the earth sciences. This list briefly describes
algunos de los programas (comerciales o de código abierto) que se utilizan comúnmente para
create geochemical graphs and diagrams. You will have to experiment with these
programs and find the best fit for their own purposes. It is about '...finding a
satisfactory software alternative that integrates: ease of use, quality, accuracy and the
design...

Overview of some software:

IgPet(commercial USD $200) - commercial software from Rockware, can perform the
most types of petrologic diagrams, including Harkers, Fenner, triangular and
classification (TAS, etc). A calculator includes (+ - / *), the logarithm functions,
raíz, raíz cuadrada, ppm y funciones de condrita. Diagramas para fines especiales, por

REES, Wood, Thompson, Sun and McDonough, etc.) can be purchased fromTerra Softa, Inc.,
written by M.J. Carr. File formats compatible with GCDkit.
Excel - Microsoft spreadsheet program. Most of the 'charts
"basics" can be generated. The diagrams can be exported to most of
drawing programs, such as CorelDraw, to "improve or embellish" the
diagrams. In addition, basic modeling can be performed such as fusion, fractionation,
AFC, etc.; through the manual construction of forms (many of these forms
They are available online by different authors). It's not very practical if one has to
work with a large number of samples and/or if a large number of
diagrams.
GCDKit(free) It is a free program written in R. (a language of
programming for computing and statistical graphics). The details can be found

specific igneous petrology graphs. Ability to export graphs and tables in
numerous formats (-jpg-pdf-eps-emf-tif-png-bmp). Ability to operate with great
amount of data (thousands) and perform statistical treatments on them. Includes
calculations for 9 different types of standards. Informative website and short time of
