SECTION ONE
1. Before you meet the 'client':
A. What are the objectives of the interview?
The objective is to understand the client’s concerns, gather relevant facts, establish a
relationship of trust, and identify the legal or practical issues that need to be
addressed. It also aims to clarify what the client expects from the engagement and
what outcomes are realistically possible.
B. Describe briefly how you plan to structure the interview (topics, order, time,
etc.):
I intend to begin with introductions and setting the purpose of the meeting. This will
be followed by fact-gathering (background details, sequence of events, supporting
documents). Next, I will clarify and summarize the main issues, then discuss possible
courses of action. Finally, I will explain next steps, timelines, and conclude with an
opportunity for the client to ask questions. The interview will be managed within the
allocated time, ensuring all key areas are covered while allowing flexibility.
C. What have you learned from your reading about interviewing that you
intend to practice or avoid?
I intend to practice active listening, maintaining eye contact, and asking open-ended
questions to encourage detailed responses. I will avoid interrupting unnecessarily,
leading questions, or making assumptions before facts are clarified. I will also avoid
technical jargon so the client clearly understands the discussion.
D. What is your role in the interview and what standpoint do you wish to adopt?
My role is to act as a professional interviewer who facilitates the client in narrating
their concerns fully and accurately. I will adopt a neutral but empathetic standpoint,
balancing professionalism with sensitivity. I aim to project reliability, confidentiality,
and non-judgmental support throughout the interview.
