Mastering Algebraic Factorization

Study Guide for Class 8 Students

1. What is Factorization?
Factorization is the process of writing an expression as a product of its factors. It helps simplify
algebraic expressions and solve equations easily. For example, x² − 9 can be written as (x + 3)(x −
3).

2. Important Factorization Formulas

(a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
(a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²
a² − b² = (a + b)(a − b)
a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²)
a³ − b³ = (a − b)(a² + ab + b²)

3. Common Methods of Factorization

1. Common factor method: Take out the common term. Example: 3x² + 6x = 3x(x + 2).

2. Grouping method: Group terms to find common factors. Example: ax + ay + bx + by = (a + b)(x +

y).

3. Using identities: Apply algebraic formulas like (a² − b²) = (a + b)(a − b).

4. Splitting the middle term: For quadratic expressions like x² + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3).

4. Common Mistakes to Avoid

■ Forgetting to take the greatest common factor first.

■ Mixing up signs when using formulas.

■ Forgetting that (a + b)² ≠ a² + b².

■ Always check by multiplying back to verify your answer.

5. Practice Problems
1. Factorize: x² − 4

2. Factorize: a² + 5a + 6

3. Factorize: 3x² − 12x

4. Factorize: x² + 7x + 10

5. Factorize: a³ − 27

Answers:
1. (x + 2)(x − 2)

2. (a + 2)(a + 3)

3. 3x(x − 4)

4. (x + 2)(x + 5)

5. (a − 3)(a² + 3a + 9)
