HV Cable Testing and Schering Bridge Analysis

The document outlines a tutorial for fourth-year students at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, focusing on high-voltage cable testing and measurements using a Schering Bridge. It includes problems related to calculating charging current, capacitance, loss angle, permittivity, and partial discharge studies. Each problem requires applying electrical engineering principles to determine various parameters of high-voltage components and materials.

EEN-660, Fourth Year (Autumn Semester)

Tutorial-6

1. A specimen of 20 m long high-voltage cable is tested at 110 kV. The

cable has a capacitance of 100 nF/km. Calculate the charging current and
its kVA drawn from testing source. Neglect the cable inductance and
losses.

2. A Schering Bridge was used to measure the capacitance and loss angle of
an HV bushing. At balance conditions, the observations on the bridge
were: the value of the standard condenser = 100 pF, R3 = 3000 ohms, C3
= 0.00250 𝜇F and R4 = 500 ohms. What are the values of capacitance
and tan 𝛿 of the bushing?

3. A Schering Bridge was used to determine the loss tangent of a 10-mm

thick Bakelite sheet at 50 Hz using a parallel-plate electrode
configuration. The electrode effective area is 250 cm2. At balance, the
bridge arms are AB: test object Cx; BC: Std. capacitor, C2 or Cs = 10 pF;
CD: variable capacitor in parallel with resistor, C4 = 100 nF and R4 = 350
Ω; DA: variable resistance, R3 = 70 Ω. Determine the permittivity and
loss tangent of the dielectric.

4. A 20 kV, 50 Hz Schering bridge has a standard capacitance of 106 μF. In

a test on a bakelite sheet balance was obtained with a capacitance of 0.35
μF in parallel with a non-inductive resistance of 318 ohms, the non-
inductive resistance in the remaining arm of the bridge being 130 ohms.
Determine the equivalent series resistance, capacitance and the p.f. of the
specimen.

5. Determine p.f. and the equivalent parallel resistance and capacitance of

the test specimen of Question 4.

6. While doing studies on partial discharges in cavities of cylindrical disc

of 1 cm diameter and 1 cm thickness, a cylindrical cavity of 1 mm dia
and 1mm thickness is made at its centre. The discharge voltage measured
across the specimen is 0.2 V with sensitivity of 1 pC/volt. What is the
magnitude of charge transferred from the cavity? Take r of disc as 2.5.
