Piston Rings

Piston rings are moving seals that maintain combustion pressure and provide oil control in
the cylinder.

In a car engine, piston rings are basically of two types.

The first type is that of ventilated top rings or compression rings.

The second type corresponds to the ventilated or oil control rings.

The main function of the top ring is to maintain, acting as a seal, the combustion pressures inside the
cylinder. This ring keeps the air/fuel mixture admitted above the piston, allowing it to compress for its
on.

The second compression ring, or intermediate ring, not only helps to seal the combustion gases but also
it also sweeps down the excess lubricant on the cylinder wall, helping the oil ring to function
correctly its function.

The third ring, usually one per piston, is used to control the lubrication of the cylinder, maintaining a
film "measure" of oil on its wall -just the necessary- and sweeping the excess towards the sump through the area
of the ventilation and the drainage slits of the piston.

The rectangular type, with a barrel-shaped face, inverted torsional conical, cleaner, and trapezoidal are -among others- the rings.

in initial operation and prevents rust during storage.

The high-strength or nodular casting, which together with a chromium or molybdenum coating, results
especially suitable for turbocharged diesel engines and many of the highly demanding four cylinders
current automotive. The chromed stainless steel compression ring is used in engines that operate under
high loads and high temperatures.

The contact face of the rings is the critical part as it works against the wall of the cylinder. Therefore, the
rings have the most convenient coating for each application, such as molybdenum, chromium, or the exclusive
triple chrome. Both chrome and molybdenum provide exceptional resistance to drag and abrasion.

All modern automotive oil rings are made of three pieces, two rails and one spacer-expander.
The stainless steel spacer-expander allows for the correct distribution
of the oil, and not only keeps the layers separated and in their place

cleaners. The design of the spacer-expander also provides sealing.

For heavy diesel engines, the 'Conformatic' ring has been designed.

These features provide a uniform contact with the cylinder wall, positive oil control, and greater

The radial thickness is verified with precise ten-thousandth micrometers. The wall of the ring can be checked.
inserting it into the piston groove and ensuring that the ring does not protrude from the groove. Remember
The carbon buildup on the used piston must be cleaned, or its measurement will not be accurate.

The light between points is determined in the factory, using precision instruments within a tolerance, greater or
less than five ten-thousandths of an inch, for the standard diameter indicated by the engine manufacturer.

For every ten-thousandth of an inch increase in the diameter of the cylinder, the light between the tips will increase somewhat.
of three thousandths or the result of multiplying by the PI factor.

Checking the light between the tips will give us an approximate idea of the wear on the cylinders that will help us
prevent the installation of rings of the wrong size. To do this, the rings must be installed in the position
más baja posible dentro del cilindro. Similar control deberá hacerse en la parte más desgastada del cilindro. El
Cylinder wear directly affects the light between the tips of the rings.

It is recommended that a maximum wear of three thousandths per inch of diameter be allowed.
cylinder. If it exceeds a maximum of ten thousandths, regardless of the diameter of the cylinder for a replacement
successful of rings, if the cylinder has worn beyond the indicated limits, it must be machined by installing
a new set of pistons and oversized rings.

There are two methods to check the tension of the rings, the diametrical, used for compression rings, and the
tangential to the oil rings.

The perimeter adjustment of the rings is defined as the ability of a piston ring to fit within a
cylindrically shaped caliber without any vacuum, allowing light to pass between the caliber and the outer diameter
of the ring.

A simplified version of this control can be made by the mechanic using a light source inside the cylinder.
and behind a temporarily installed ring. Remember that if the cylinder is ovalized, a good ring will look
to be in bad condition.

A piston ring must be flat on its lower or upper surfaces, and the groove in which it will be installed.
it must also be flat and parallel.

There are permissible tolerances, but they must be kept within one and a half thousandths of an inch.
Piston ring replacement

The replacement of the piston rings must be done carefully.

maintaining precise adjustments and tolerances, not only with the rings of
piston, but also with all the other parts of the engine. The
the behavior of the piston rings is drastically affected by the
condition of the other engine related parts.

One of the most important considerations in replacing the rings

The engine block and all parts must be absolutely clean.
In modern engines, the rings of each cylinder travel
approximately 457 meters per minute at cruising speeds in
road. Any foreign particle will cause wear
extremely fast, and finally the engine failure. These are
only the foundations of a correct installation.

First, using a border cutter, remove the border from the part.
upper part of the cylinder. Without this prior operation, the pistons can
getting damaged, breaking or bending their skirts.

In a worn engine, the upper edge of the compression ring and the
the upper part of the cylinder has worn out at the same time. The installation
of a new ring, with its total width intact, without removing the edge of the
cylinder, will result in the ring hitting the rim, making proper performance impossible with the
possible breakage of the ring or the piston skirt.

Then, check the diameter of the cylinders. Using a precision gauge, check the ovality of the cylinder in
the upper, central, and lower parts of the ring's path.

Many engine manufacturers set permissible limits, but a good rule of thumb is a maximum of three.
thousandths of ovalization.

Ten thousandths of conicity. When the manufacturers' recommendations are below these limits, these
they must take priority.

Then you must polish the cylinders, using the appropriate tool, and remove "the shine" from the cylinders to ensure the
retention of the lubricant and quick settling.

Some engine manufacturers recommend specific finishes, please verify them in the specifications manual.
No specifications exist, a good finish should have 15 to 30 microinches.

The crossing angle should be approximately 45 degrees or as close to this as possible, between 30 and 60 degrees.

Make sure to completely clean the cylinders and the bottom of the block after honing. A solution of water
Jabonosa is the best.

The next step is cleaning the piston grooves. If the pistons are to be reused, clean everything.
carbon from the bottom of the grooves and check the light with a new piston ring.

The pistons that have reached the end of their useful life must be replaced with new ones. Make sure to choose
the correct ring game for the application, taking into account all the requirements for its behavior.

Check the diameter of the cylinder and the ring by controlling the light between the tips of the compression ring at the parts.
superior and inferior of the cylinder. An inverted piston must be used to square the ring inside the cylinder before
check the light, not doing so will give an incorrect light measurement between points.

Install the piston and the rings in the cylinder, using a ring compressor in good condition, being careful to
keep the clamp square with the top of the block to avoid chipping or breaking
rings during their installation. The cylinders and rings must be well lubricated with motor oil.

A final recommendation: The installation of all parts and components of the engine, as well as its assembly, must be
facts according to the manufacturer's engine specifications, paying particular attention to the gaps between the
crankshaft and bearings, as well as between the valve stems and their guides.

All torque values for the engine bolts should also be followed. The engine assembly must be carried out
in the cleanest environment possible.
