FRESHERS’ WEEK 2025 INTER-FACULTY DEBATE COMPETITION MODALITIES

The Freshers' debate will take on the conventional persuasive debate style which will feature
representatives from the attendant faculties presenting their debate speeches on a topic that had
been communicated to them beforehand.
This debate will consist of 2 rounds.

1st round: Presidential Style Debate. 14 faculties face-off, 7 advance.


In this round, the Faculty of Computing Science will be opposing the motion: “The government
should heavily subsidize industries of strategic importance e.g agriculture, power etc.”

2nd round: An impromptu motion will be given, 5 minutes of preparation, one speaker as
representative for each faculty. Representatives are allowed to freestyle (not necessarily
presidential style debate format).

RULES AND GUIDELINES


1.​ Each faculty is to present two representatives for a debate round: a chief speaker and a
supporting speaker.
2.​ Timing: The chief speaker has a total of 5 minutes of speech time; the supporting speaker
has 3 minutes of speech time.
3.​ The standard for appearance would be based on the universally approved style of formal
dressing.
4.​ All speakers are expected to be at the venue of the competition at least thirty (30) minutes
before the commencement of the Competition. Defaulters of this are liable to penalties as
determined by the organizers/judges.
5.​ The judges’ decisions remain final, incontestable and are subject to no frivolous appeal.
Confrontations with the judges before or after the competition are strictly prohibited.
6.​ The passing of papers to speakers by supporters, no matter the content or intent, is highly
prohibited.
7.​ Speakers should not stop their speech in between a presentation for no reason
whatsoever, unless stopped by the judges.
8.​ There will be fact checkers at the competition to verify the sources of every fact quoted by
a speaker. Any erroneous fact will be passed to the judges, who will penalize such speakers.
9.​ Any complaints on results or perceived breach of modalities by any faculty should be
reported to the organizers.

GRADING METRICS

The debate will be graded based on the following metrics:


●​ Content & Strength of Arguments: The depth of a speaker’s arguments and how they
weigh favorably against the opposing team’s arguments – 20 points.
●​ Stage management & Delivery: How a speaker marshals their points with minimal
incoherence or nervousness; apt gesticulations; appropriate usage of gesticulations and body
movements – 15 points
●​ Depth of Research: How deeply a team must have researched; can be determined
through statistics quoted and authorities cited — 10 marks
●​ Timing: How well the speaker keeps to time — 5 points
