SELF-STUDY PROBLEMS
1. a) Two cylinders, one containing methane at 100 psig and the other containing methane at 0
psig, are connected and the pressures are allowed to equalize. If the volume of each
cylinders is 5 cuft and the temperature is held constant at 90 F what would be the
equalization pressure, the density of the methane under this pressure, and the weight of gas
in the system
Assume gas behaves as an ideal gas
b) If the temperature of the system were reduced to 60 F, what would the pressure be?
c) Can you repeat the same for calculation for real gas behavior?
If NOT, why? If you can, DO IT!8-)
2. A high-pressure cell has a volume of 0.330 cuft and contains gas at 2500 psia and 130 oF, its
compressibility factor is 0.75 at these conditions. When 43.6 SCF measured at 14.7 psia and
60 oF were bled from the cell through a wet test meter, the pressure dropped to 1000 psia, the
temperature remaining at 130 oF. What is the gas compressibility factor at 1000 psia and 130 oF?
3. A natural gas with a specific gravity of 0.75 has a gas formation volume factor of 0.00529
cuft/SCF at the prevailing reservoir pressure and temperature. Calculate the density of the gas at
reservoir conditions.
4. Given the following gas composition at 3000 psia and 150 oF.
Component : Methane Ethane Carbon dioxide Hydrogen Sulfide
Mole fraction : 0.75 0.05 0.10 0.10
a) Calculate z-factor using Standing and Katz Chart
b) Calculate the gas viscosity
5. An ideal gas composed of only carbon dioxide and methane has a specific gravity of 0.89. What
is the weight percent and volume percent of carbon dioxide?
