Engineering
“An engineer is a person who can take a theory and attach wheels to it. ”, -
Leonard Louis Levinson. I agree with this statement. In addition, I note that in my opinion, an
engineer is a person who embodies ideas into reality, applies theory in practice, solves problems
that stand in the way.
Obviously, the contribution of engineers to our lives is huge. And what types of engineers
are there? The simplest example in everyone's mind is a mechanical engineer. Specialists in this
field develop various machines and equipment, make the necessary calculations and monitor the
implementation of design decisions. Another well-known represent is an electrical engineer. This
is a technical specialist in the design, production and operation of electrical products. Civil
engineering is a more relevant field of activity than ever, where highly qualified personnel are
contracted. By definition, a builder is a specialist who is engaged in planning and organizing
construction and repair work. The most dangerous and difficult type, in my opinion, is survival
engineering. The main goal is to rescue victims from a dangerous situation. Biomedical and
genetic engineering are close to my training program. This is a huge field for activity, because
people's health is always a priority. Development of new medicines, doing research for an
effective method of treating many diseases is the main task of biomedics. Speaking about space
and flights, we can mention aerospace and aviation engineering. It is also worth noting the gold
mine of the modern industry – computer engineering.
Today we do not think about the fact that we regularly use the results of engineering. But
many gadgets and household appliances have gone through centuries of history to become
everyday items. For example, on March 28, 1797 in the USA, Nathaniel Briggs from New
Hampshire patented the first washing machine, which is a wooden box with a movable frame.
The next similar invention was patented again in the USA, in 1851 – the American James King
invented a washing machine with a rotating drum, which was very similar to the modern one,
only had a manual drive. In following years, such inventions appeared with enviable regularity,
overgrown with new improvements.
Unfortunately, humanity often has to face different types of disasters, both man-made and
natural. The greatest threat in the near future, in my opinion, is overpopulation. Every year the
number of people increases, the needs for food and natural resources are growing. Surely, by the
end of this decade, we will develop ways to recreate natural resources and return them to the
natural cycle. But now fresh water reduces the areas of fertile land are shrinking with an increase
in the number of factories and emissions from them. Certainly, there are also positive aspects –
working hands. But are we in a world where a person is required to stand at the machine? The
only thing that remains is the maintenance of robots. I am not preaching the idea of genocide; I
just want to draw attention to this problem.
Another threat in the near future is the emergence of new infections. To prevent
outbreaks of diseases that we regularly hear about from news reports, scientists and doctors are
developing systems to regulate the actions of patients and health workers. The diseases
themselves are being studied, high powered instruments are being used in laboratories,
mathematical models are being developed, predictions are being made. Based on numerous trials
of drugs for any disease, it is offered to the patient. Assessing the consequences of taking the
drug during safe tests, we can conclude about its effectiveness and then bring it to the market.
There are not many huge structures in my country. One of the ones I remembered is the
Crimean Bridge – the pride of the country.
Construction began in 2016 and lasted until 2018. Advanced technologies were used to
implement the engineering and technical project. The feasibility of the project was estimated at
227.92 billion rubles. The structure itself consists of two bridges parallel to each other –
automobile and railway, which are given stability by 595 supports. The formal length of the
structure is 19 km, but if you make more accurate measurements, it turns out that the length of
the railway line is 18.1 km, and the highway is 17 km. The Crimean Bridge belongs to the
category of marine objects of navigable type. For this purpose, special spans are provided in the
design. The length of each "arch" is 227 m, and the height is 35 m above the water, which allows
not only small vessels, but also military equipment to pass under the bridge. It should be noted
how many workers were involved. Thousands of builders created this project from scratch. The
name "Crimean Bridge" was chosen as a result of online voting.
I agree that spending money on such structures is justified. Even based on the example
given above, we can say that the benefits that the bridge brings have already exceeded the
invested funds. The construction stimulated economic growth. Goods grown in the south
(Crimea, Sevastopol, Simferopol) are now delivered faster and cheaper to central and remote
cities of Russia.
In conclusion, I will again note the importance of such a profession as an engineer. I hope
that everyone who bears this proud name will strive to change our world for the better.
