Quadratic Equations in Sprinkler Areas

The document presents a math assignment involving two sprinklers with given radii and their areas, leading to the formation of quadratic equations for both R and r. It also includes a scenario about ticket sales for an amusement park, where the total number of tickets and revenue are calculated, resulting in the number of children and adults visiting the park. The final calculations provide the areas irrigated by the sprinklers and the total revenue from ticket sales.

Maths assignment

Given:

 Two sprinklers form circular areas with radii RRR and rrr, where R>rR > rR>r
 The sum of their areas:

πR2+πr2=130π⇒R2+r2=130(1)\pi R^2 + \pi r^2 = 130\pi \Rightarrow R^2 + r^2 = 130 \

tag{1}πR2+πr2=130π⇒R2+r2=130(1)

 The distance between centres is 14 m (since circles touch externally):

R+r=14(2)R + r = 14 \tag{2}R+r=14(2)

(i) Obtain a quadratic equation involving RRR and rrr

From the above:

 Equation (1): R2+r2=130R^2 + r^2 = 130R2+r2=130

 Equation (2): R+r=14R + r = 14R+r=14

Let’s square equation (2):

(R+r)2=142=196⇒R2+r2+2Rr=196(3)(R + r)^2 = 14^2 = 196 \Rightarrow R^2 + r^2 + 2Rr =

196 \tag{3}(R+r)2=142=196⇒R2+r2+2Rr=196(3)

Now substitute equation (1) into (3):

130+2Rr=196⇒2Rr=66⇒Rr=33130 + 2Rr = 196 \Rightarrow 2Rr = 66 \Rightarrow Rr =

33130+2Rr=196⇒2Rr=66⇒Rr=33

✅ So, the two equations are:

 R+r=14R + r = 14R+r=14
 Rr=33Rr = 33Rr=33

Let’s form a quadratic in RRR (or rrr):

Let’s write quadratic in RRR:

R2−(R+r)R+Rr=0⇒R2−14R+33=0(4)R^2 - (R + r)R + Rr = 0 \Rightarrow R^2 - 14R + 33 = 0 \

tag{4}R2−(R+r)R+Rr=0⇒R2−14R+33=0(4)

✅ Answer (i): Quadratic in RRR:

R2−14R+33=0R^2 - 14R + 33 = 0R2−14R+33=0

(ii) Write a quadratic equation involving only rrr

From R+r=14R + r = 14R+r=14, we have:

R=14−rR = 14 - rR=14−r

Now substitute into R2+r2=130R^2 + r^2 = 130R2+r2=130:

(14−r)2+r2=130⇒196−28r+r2+r2=130⇒2r2−28r+196=130⇒2r2−28r+66=0⇒r2−14r+33=0(5)
(14 - r)^2 + r^2 = 130 \Rightarrow 196 - 28r + r^2 + r^2 = 130 \Rightarrow 2r^2 - 28r + 196 =
130 \Rightarrow 2r^2 - 28r + 66 = 0 \Rightarrow r^2 - 14r + 33 = 0 \tag{5}
(14−r)2+r2=130⇒196−28r+r2+r2=130⇒2r2−28r+196=130⇒2r2−28r+66=0⇒r2−14r+33=0(5)

✅ Answer (ii): Quadratic in rrr:

r2−14r+33=0r^2 - 14r + 33 = 0r2−14r+33=0

(iii) (a) Find the radius rrr and the corresponding area irrigated.

From equation (5):

r2−14r+33=0r^2 - 14r + 33 = 0r2−14r+33=0

Solving this using quadratic formula:

r=14±(−14)2−4⋅1⋅332=14±196−1322=14±642=14±82⇒r=11 or r=3r = \frac{14 \pm \sqrt{(-

14)^2 - 4 \cdot 1 \cdot 33}}{2} = \frac{14 \pm \sqrt{196 - 132}}{2} = \frac{14 \pm \sqrt{64}}
{2} = \frac{14 \pm 8}{2} \Rightarrow r = 11 \text{ or } r = 3r=214±(−14)2−4⋅1⋅33
=214±196−132=214±64=214±8⇒r=11 or r=3

Since R>rR > rR>r, we take:

 r=3r = 3r=3
 So R=14−3=11R = 14 - 3 = 11R=14−3=11

Now, area irrigated by radius r=3r = 3r=3:

Area=πr2=π⋅32=9π m2\text{Area} = \pi r^2 = \pi \cdot 3^2 = 9\pi \

text{ m}^2Area=πr2=π⋅32=9π m2

✅ Answer (iii a):

 Radius r=3r = 3r=3 m

 Area = 9π9\pi9π m²

(iii) (b) Find the radius RRR and the corresponding area irrigated.

From above:

 R=11R = 11R=11
 Area = πR2=π⋅112=121π\pi R^2 = \pi \cdot 11^2 = 121\piπR2=π⋅112=121π m²

✅ Answer (iii b):

 Radius R=11R = 11R=11 m

 Area = 121π121\pi121π m²
Given:

 Child ticket = ₹150

 Adult ticket = ₹250
 Total tickets sold = 300
 Total collection = ₹55,000

Let:
 xxx = number of children
 yyy = number of adults

(i) Write the given situation algebraically

We are given:

1. Total number of tickets:

x+y=300(1)x + y = 300 \tag{1}x+y=300(1)

2. Total amount collected:

150x+250y=55000(2)150x + 250y = 55000 \tag{2}150x+250y=55000(2)

✅ Answer (i):

x+y=300and150x+250y=55000x + y = 300 \quad \text{and} \quad 150x + 250y =

55000x+y=300and150x+250y=55000

(ii) (a) How many children visited the amusement park that day?

From equation (1):

y=300−xy = 300 - xy=300−x

Substitute into equation (2):

⇒x=200150x + 250(300 - x) = 55000 \Rightarrow 150x + 75000 - 250x = 55000 \Rightarrow -

150x+250(300−x)=55000⇒150x+75000−250x=55000⇒−100x+75000=55000⇒−100x=−20000

100x + 75000 = 55000 \Rightarrow -100x = -20000 \Rightarrow x =

200150x+250(300−x)=55000⇒150x+75000−250x=55000⇒−100x+75000=55000⇒−100x=−20
000⇒x=200

✅ Answer (ii a):

200 children visited the park.

(ii) (b) How many adults visited the amusement park that day?

From equation (1):

x+y=300⇒200+y=300⇒y=100x + y = 300 \Rightarrow 200 + y = 300 \Rightarrow y =
100x+y=300⇒200+y=300⇒y=100

✅ Answer (ii b):

100 adults visited the park.

(iii) How much amount will be collected if 250 children and 100 adults visit the
park?

Total amount:

=250×150+100×250=37500+25000=₹62,500= 250 \times 150 + 100 \times 250 = 37500 +

25000 = ₹62,500=250×150+100×250=37500+25000=₹62,500

✅ Answer (iii):
₹62,500 will be collected.
