Hexagonal Simple
Unit cell of the simple hexagonal network, and atomic base needed to construct the
hexagonal close-packed structure.
From this structure, the following characteristics can be highlighted:
Atoms per cell
The total number of atoms per cell is 6: 6 (in the center of the bases) + 1x3 (in the
intermediate layer) + 8 (at the vertices of the prism). However, a question arises,
because in the intermediate layer six portions of atoms are counted (and before we counted
only 3). However, note that only three of those portions have their centers within
from the small cell; the other three have it in contiguous small cells. And note, furthermore,
that the volume missing from the atomic portions that have their center inside
from the cell, it is precisely the one that the portions with their center outside contribute,
and therefore, there are three atoms that contribute to the intermediate plane.
Coordination Number
The coordination number of the HC structure is 12, as can be verified.
easily counting the number of neighbors of the central atom of a base.
Directions of higher atomic concentration
The atoms are in contact along the edges of the bases of the prism.
maximum compactness directions), so a = 2r. On the other hand, the three atoms
intermediates along with each of the atoms at the center of the bases, form a
perfectly regular tetrahedron. From this, the relationship can be obtained: 9
Packing Fraction
Just like in the CCC. The packing fraction turns out to be 74%. It is
also, therefore, a structure of maximum packing fraction.
Plans of greater atomic concentration (compactness)
The planes of maximum compactness are parallel to the bases of the hexagonal prism.
- Interstices.- There is a total of 6 octahedral interstices and 12 tetrahedral interstices per
cell. We leave it to the reader to identify them.
Face-Centered Cubic (FCC)
In the face-centered cubic structure, the atoms are located at the
vertices of the unit cell and at the center of its faces, that is, in the positions
of the nodes of the Bravais lattice of the same name.
The most important characteristics of this type of structure can be summarized
en:
Atoms per cell
The number of atoms contained in the unit cell is 4: 3 atoms (in the
center of the faces) and 4 atoms (at the vertices).
Coordination Number
The coordination number of the CCC structure is 12. The simplest form of
carrying out this recount is by mentally placing oneself at the atom at the center of
one of the faces (red in the following figure), and count all the atoms
in contact with him (the ones colored in blue).
Directions of greater atomic concentration
The atoms are in contact along the diagonals of the face, that is, at
long of the addresses 6. Thus, 7, from where, 8
Packing Fraction
You can easily check that the packing fraction is 74%.
This value represents a maximum limit for the packing fraction in
the structures in which only identical atoms are involved
Planes of higher atomic concentration (compactness)
The structures that have the maximum value of the fraction of
packaging, 74%, it is said to be structures of maximum fraction of
packaging, or maximum compactness. As a result of this, in the
CCC structure can be found atomic planes with the highest concentration.
atomic possible. These planes are the {111}.
Interstices
Unlike the CCI structure, in the CCC both types of interstices have
regular forms.
CUBIC SYSTEM:
It has three quaternary axes that pass through the centers of the faces; 4 axes
ternary that pass through the vertices; 6 binary axes that pass through the centers of
the edges; 3 planes of symmetry that contain the quaternary axes; 6 planes of
symmetry that contains binary axes and center of symmetry.
