Granulometry of Concrete Aggregates

The document describes the procedures for determining the particle size distribution of aggregates for concrete. These include sieving samples of sand and gravel and calculating the retained and passing percentages for each sieve. A particle size curve must be plotted and verified to fall within the ranges established by the standards. The fineness modulus is also calculated to classify the sand. An example of calculations for a sand sample is provided.

CÁLCULOS A REALIZAR

The amount of material retained in each mesh will be summed, which will allow us to
detect any loss during the sieving process, if there is a loss of
more than 0.5%, compared to the initial, the test is considered unsatisfactory,
if it is smaller, it is considered valid and compensation will be made by adding or subtracting the

difference between the total weight of the sample before sieving and the total weight of the
sample after sieving, at the highest retained weight, in order to obtain the weight
initial of the sample.

2-Calculate the percentages of material retained on each sieve by dividing the weight
retained in each of them between the total dry weight.

3-With the partial withheld percentages, calculate the withheld percentages.

accumulated and the percentages passing.

4-Plot the grain size curve of the material on a graph that has the abscissa on
the logarithmic scale, the opening of the mesh, and on the y-axis the % of material that
they pass through those meshes, at natural scale.

The previous step will be done for both sands and gravels.

6-With reference to step number 4, graph the ranges established by the standards in
its corresponding figure, both for sands and for gravels; verifying from this
check if the grain size falls within the corresponding range.

7-Calculate the fineness modulus; for sands

Curve Analysis

When observing the curve obtained and comparing it with what is established in ASTM E 11.
we can observe that the values are not within the minimum permissible range,
therefore the use of this sand for the production of concrete is not recommended.
