1. Briefly explain the difference between application software and system
software. Give a suitable example of each type of software.
System software is known as software that controls, supports or operates
the computer, an example of system software includes MacOS and
windows.
Application software is known as a software designed to handle specific
tasks for users, an example of application software is Word, Excel and
Outlook.
2. Explain why a computer still needs an operating system even if it is mainly
used for playing computer games?
The operating system is a software side of a computer system, and it
enables a user to interact with the hardware applications and information
on the computer.
3. Which one of the following does not belong with the others? Linux,
Android, Internet explorer and Windows 10?
Android does not belong in with the others, because it lies under the
application software and the rest are aligned with system software.
4. Three functions of an operating system.
Provides an interface
Process and task management
Input or output management
5. Why is necessary to have usernames and passwords if one is working on
a network?
It is necessary to have usernames and passwords because each user
account should be accessible only entering a username and password in
order to safeguard users privacy.
6. Explain what is, meant by a ’live’ tile in Windows, and give one example
of this.
Tiles are designed to display ‘live’ information and start menu.
7. What is a dialog box and what is it used for?
A dialog box is a common type of window in the GUI of an operating
system, an example is when you are using a program and you want to
open a file, you can interact with the ‘ file open’ dialog box.
8. Identify each of the following controls in the dialog box below by writing
down the control and the letter where it is found on the screenshot. Text
box, Spinner, Radio button, Command button, Combo/List box, Check box
A text box is used for a user to enter some text on the web form
application.
The Radio button is used to showcase items of a user in which they can
also choose one
The command button is also used to allow the user to click on a a button
which will start the processing of the form.
The list and check box is used to provide a list of options in which the user
can have multiple choices
