Lecture 08 - Problem Set
1. If an initial amount A0 of money is invested at an interest rate i compounded n times a
year, the value of the investment after t years is
nt
i
A = A0 1+ .
n
If we let n → ∞, we refer to the continuous compounding of interest. Show that if
interest is compounded continuously, then the amount after n years is
A = A0 eit .

3. The graph of the first derivative f ′ of a function f is shown.
a) On what intervals is f increasing? Explain.
b) At what values of x does f have a local maximum or minimum? Explain.
c) On what intervals is f concave upward or concave downward? Explain.
d) What are the x-coordinates of the inflection points of f ? Why?
4. Between 0◦ C and 30◦ C, the volume V (in cubic centimeters) of 1 kg of water at a tem-
perature T is given approximately by the formula
V = 999.87 − 0.06426T + 0.0085043T 2 − 0.0000679T 3
Find the temperature at which water has its maximum density.

5. Let f ( x ) = x 2 +9
, g( x ) = 3x5 − 5x3 + 3 and h( x ) = 2x + cot x, 0 < x < π.
a) Find the intervals of increase or decrease.
b) Find the local maximum and minimum values.
c) Find the intervals of concavity and the inflection points.
6. Two runners start a race at the same time and finish in a tie. Prove that at some time
during the race they have the same velocity.
7. Find the absolute maximum and absolute minimum values of f on the given interval.
a) f ( x ) = 3x2 − 12x + 5, [0,3]
b) f ( x ) = (ln x )/x, [1,3]
c) f ( x ) = x − 2 cos x, [−π, π ]
d) f ( x ) = xe− x , [0,2]
8. At 2:00 P.M. a car’s speedometer reads 30mi/h. At 2:10 P.M. it reads 50mi/h. Show that
at some time between 2 : 00 and 2 : 10 the acceleration is exactly 120mi/h2 .
