Chapter 3-
Electrochemistry
1. Electrochemistry- study of production of electricity from energy
released during a spontaneous reaction- using this energy to carry
out non-spontaneous reaction.
2. Battery n fuel cells -chemical energy electrical energy
3. Electrochemical reactions- energy efficient n less polluting
4. Examples of electrochemical origin:
Transmission of sensory signals through cells brain & vice
versa
Communication between cells
5. Daniell cell- converts chemical energy electrical energy.
Zn(s) + Cu2+ (aq) Zn2+ (aq) + Cu(s)
Has potential of 1.1V when conc. Of Zn2+ n Cu2+ are 1M.
Also called galvanic/ voltaic cell
6. In galvanic cell- gibbs energy of spontaneous reaction electrical
work used in motor/ heater/ fan/ geyser.
7. Working of Daniell cell:
Reduction half reaction- copper electrode and oxidation half
reaction- zinc electrode. These two portions are called- half
cells/ redox couples.
Each half cell consists of a metallic electrode dipped in
electrolyte.
Electrodes internally connected- salt bridge, externally-metallic
wire, voltmeter n switch.
If electrodes dipped in same electrolyte- no slat bridge
At each electrode electrolyte interface, there is a tendency of
metal ions to deposit on the metal electrode trying to make it
+vely charged. Metals atoms of electrod- tendency going into
solution as ions n leave behind the electrons at the electrode
trying to make it -vely charged.
8. Electrode potential: potential difference developed between the
electrode and the electrolyte.
9. When the concentrations of all the species involved in a half cell is
unity, electrode potential called- standard electrode potential or
reduction potential.
10. half-cell in which oxidation takes place: anode & reduction:
cathode
11. Electrons flow cathode anode & current flow anode
cathode.
12. The potential difference between the 2 electrodes of galvanic
cell is-cell potential- measured in volts.
13. When no current is drawn through the cell- cell electromotive
force( EMF).
14. half cell- standard hydrogen electrode – represented Pt(s)│H 2
(g)│H+
