CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

SIWES stands for Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme. Established in 1971, the
Industrial Training Fund has operated consistently and painstakingly within the context of its
enabling laws Decree 47 of 1971 as Amended in the 2011 ITF ACT. It is a skills training
program in Nigeria designed to expose and prepare students of tertiary institutions for the
industrial work situations they are likely to encounter after graduation. The program allows
students to gain practical experience in their field of study by working in relevant industries.

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a Skills Training Programme
designed to prepare and expose Students of Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of
Technology, Colleges of Agriculture and Colleges of Education for the Industrial Work
situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The Scheme affords Students the opportunity
of familiarizing and exposing themselves to handling equipment and machinery that are
usually not available in their Institutions.

Before the establishment of the Scheme, there was a growing concern that graduates of our
Institutions of higher learning lacked adequate practical knowledge and that the theoretical
education in Higher Institutions was not responsive to the needs of the Employers’ of Labour.
It is against this background that the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) initiated, designed and
introduced SIWES Scheme in 1973 to acquaint Students with the skills of handling Industrial
equipment and machinery. The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) solely funded the Scheme
during its formative years. However, due to financial constraints, the Fund withdrew from the
Scheme in 1978. The Federal Government noting the significance of the skills training,
handed the management of the Scheme to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and
the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979. In November, 1984 management
and implementation of the Scheme was again reverted to the ITF with the funding to be solely
borne by the Federal Government.

9

 Switch - connects devices within a network (like a local area network or LAN) by
using packet switching to receive, process, and forward data to the correct destination
device.

Crimping of Ethernet Cables

21
Crimping is a mechanical joining process that involves deforming one or more pieces of
material to hold them together. It's commonly used in electrical work to connect wires to
terminals or other connectors, creating a secure and often permanent connection.

Steps involved in the crimping process;

 Wire stripping - Carefully remove the insulation from the end of the wire to expose the
wire strands, ensuring not to damage the strands.

 Connector Selection - Choose the correct crimp terminal or connector that matches the
wire gauge and application.

 Tool Selection - Select the appropriate crimping tool designed for the specific
connector and wire gauge.

 Crimping - Place the stripped wire into the connector, ensuring it is fully inserted to
the designated stop point.

 Position in tool - Place the connector and wire assembly into the crimping tool,
ensuring proper alignment and placement.

 Crimp - Activate the crimping tool, applying controlled pressure to deform the
connector barrel and create the connection.

 Remove crimp - Carefully remove the crimped wire and connector from the tool.

 Test crimp - Perform test crimps on similar wires to ensure the tool and crimping process
are producing reliable connections.

22
Printer Maintenance

Regular printer maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. It

involves cleaning, replacing consumables, updating software, and proper handling to prevent

Graphic Design

At Nigerian Navy Microfinance Bank, I was also exposed to the use of graphic design tools to
create simple but effective visual materials for communication and branding purposes. This
experience broadened my creativity and technical skills beyond hardware and networking.

Design

Design is the process of creating a plan, scheme, or specification for constructing or forming
an object, system, or process to meet a specific purpose or solve a problem. It can also refer to
the resulting plan, sketch, or decorative pattern itself, or the act of creating it. The concept is
broad, encompassing everything from product and user interface design to architectural
blueprints, business processes, and even artistic arrangements, with a fundamental goal of
creating solutions and improving the human experience.

Key Aspects Of Design

Design is more than just creating visuals; it is about solving problems and communicating
ideas effectively. During my exposure to graphics design, I learned that good design requires
balancing creativity with functionality. The key aspects of design I worked with and studied
include:

Typography

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible,
readable, and visually appealing. It involves the selection of typefaces, fonts, sizes, and the
adjustment of elements like leading (line spacing), tracking (character spacing), and alignment
to create effective communication and establish visual hierarchy. Typography is essential in
both digital and print design, impacting the overall tone, user experience, and clarity of
information.

Color Theory

28
Color theory is the study of how colors interact and are perceived, explaining the science and
art of color mixing, harmony, and symbolism to create appealing visual elements. It involves
organizing colors on a color wheel into primary, secondary, and tertiary categories to
understand relationships like complementary colors (opposites) and analogous colors
(neighbors). Color theory principles help artists and designers select color harmonies, which
are combinations of colors that produce specific emotional responses and moods in an
audience by controlling hue, saturation, and value.

Layout and Composition

Layout and composition are the fundamental principles for arranging design elements like
text, images, and shapes on a page or screen to create a clear, impactful, and aesthetically
pleasing final product. Composition focuses on the harmonious relationship and balance of
individual elements within a design to convey a message, while layout refers to the practical,
organized structure and placement of these elements to guide the viewer's eye and ensure
clarity. Key principles include proximity, alignment, contrast, repetition, and white
space (negative space), all working together to create a unified and understandable design.

Visual Hierarchy

Visual hierarchy is a design principle that organizes and presents design elements in order of
their importance to guide the viewer's eye and emphasize key information. By strategically
manipulating elements like size, color, contrast, placement, and typography, designers can
create a clear structure and flow, ensuring the audience sees the most crucial content first and
understands the intended message.

Imagery and Iconography

Imagery is the use of descriptive language or visuals to create mental images for a reader or
observer, while iconography is the symbolic meaning or system of images used to convey
specific ideas, themes, or identities within a particular culture or context. Imagery makes a
scene vivid, whereas iconography provides the visual "vocabulary" of symbols within a work
of art or design, such as a religious symbol, a political emblem, or a simple menu icon.

29
Iconography is the study, description, and interpretation of the subjects, themes, and
symbolism within images, or a specific system of symbols used by an artist or culture to
convey meaning.

Consistency

Consistency in design is the practice of applying a uniform style, appearance, and behavior to
visual and functional elements across all brand touchpoints to create a cohesive and
predictable user experience. It builds brand recognition, enhances user familiarity, and
improves usability and learnability by reducing cognitive load and fostering trust. Key aspects
include maintaining consistency in color palettes, typography, layouts, imagery, and
interaction patterns, all guided by a comprehensive design system or style guide.

Web Design

Web design is the process of creating the visual aesthetic and interactive experience of a
website, balancing a site's look and feel with its usability to ensure it's engaging, accessible,
and functions smoothly across devices. It involves strategic planning, user interface (UI) and
user experience (UX) design, content organization, and the application of various design
elements like color, typography, and imagery to build a strong online presence for a brand.

Key Aspects of Web design

Web Design

I engaged in web design projects using Figma, a popular UI/UX design tool. These projects
allowed me to apply design principles to create functional and visually appealing layouts for
websites without writing code. One of the key projects I worked on during my SIWES was the
redesign of the bank’s landing page. This project exposed me to practical applications of
UI/UX principles while using Figma as my main design tool.

CHAPTER THREE

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND PROBLEMS SOLVED

PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

 We were only two interns in the IT department, which meant tasks were sometimes
overwhelming.
 I had to learn and practice across different IT areas (networking, hardware, graphics,
web design) at the same time
 Some projects, especially graphics and web design tasks, required more time than the
work schedule allowed
 Getting to work on time was sometimes difficult due to inconsistent transport and
traffic delays.

PROBLEMS SOLVED

 I learned to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and seek guidance from
permanent staff when necessary. This improved my problem-solving skills and ability
to work under pressure.
 I kept a personal logbook of tasks and took notes daily, which helped me track
progress and retain knowledge effectively.
 I developed better time management skills and learned to complete designs in phases,
ensuring progress was made even under tight deadlines.
 I adjusted my schedule by leaving home earlier and planning my routes better, which
reduced lateness and stress.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

CONCLUSION

My SIWES training at Nigerian Navy Microfinance Bank was an enriching and eye-opening
experience. It provided me with the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge I had
acquired in school to real-life situations. I gained practical skills in computer hardware
maintenance, networking, customer support, graphics design, and web design using Figma.
The training also helped me develop essential workplace skills such as time management,
teamwork, communication, adaptability, and problem-solving. Despite challenges such as
transportation issues and a limited number of interns in my department, I was able to
successfully carry out my assigned tasks and acquire valuable knowledge that will be
beneficial in my career.

Overall, the program strengthened my technical foundation and deepened my interest in

UI/UX design and IT support, which I intend to pursue further.

RECOMMENDATION

 Increase the number of interns in each department to reduce workload and improve
collaboration.
 Acquire additional skills through online platforms (such as Figma, UI/UX, and other
digital tools) to complement workplace training.
 Strengthen collaborations with organizations to ensure students are placed in
environments relevant to their fields of study.

The SIWES program bridges the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge by preparing students for the industrial work environment through hands-on experience. It exposes students to real-world work situations, equipment, and techniques not typically available in their academic institutions, complementing their theoretical studies .

Preventive maintenance practices critical for motherboard longevity include regular cleaning to prevent dust accumulation, ensuring a stable power supply to avoid electrical damage, and proper grounding to prevent electrostatic discharge. These practices are important as they reduce the risk of overheating, electrical faults, and physical damage, ensuring the motherboard's reliability and sustained performance .

During the SIWES program, interns faced challenges such as a limited number of interns in the department, transportation issues, and restricted access to some advanced tools. These challenges were overcome by developing effective time management skills, adaptability, and proactive learning strategies .

Figma played a crucial role as a cloud-based collaborative interface design tool in the graphics design experience at the Nigerian Navy Microfinance Bank. It facilitated the creation, prototyping, and testing of websites and digital products, allowing multiple users to work on the same design file in real-time, thereby streamlining the design process and enhancing creativity and technical skills .

Various organizations play distinct roles in the management of the SIWES program. The Federal Government provides funding and mandates student placements. The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) formulates policies, organizes orientations, and supervises students. The National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and other agencies vet and approve student placements and ensure program accreditation. Higher institutions appoint coordinators and support effective operation, while employers accept students for training and provide necessary facilities .

The SIWES program was established in 1971 by the Industrial Training Fund to address the lack of practical knowledge among graduates. Initially funded by the ITF, financial difficulties led to the Federal Government assuming responsibility in 1979, with management shifting between the NUC, NBTE, and back to the ITF. Over the years, its objective has remained consistent: preparing students for real-world industrial environments by providing practical experience alongside theoretical education .
