CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION
This study aims to answer the problem, how do the twelve archetypes of the
hero's journey contribute to Nora Seed's individuation process in the novel The
Midnight Library. Through an archetypal analysis based on Carol S. Pearson's
theoretical framework, this study has successfully shown that the twelve archetypes
do not fundamentally structure and drive Nora Seed's psychological transformation.
The journey in Midnight Library, as a metaphorical space for inner processes, maps
the Jungian individuation journey, namely a psychological process that attempts to
unite, combine, and organize various aspects of a person's personality to achieve
self actualization, which aspects are the ego, soul, and self.
The findings of this study indicate that Nora's character development clearly
follows the three stages of the hero's journey, which aligns directly with the theme
of the research title. The Preparation Stage represents the Death of Nora's old ego,
where the analysis shows how Nora begins her story as The Innocent, which “falls”,
and is then completely dominated by the despair of The Orphan. This stage depicts
the deconstruction of her old, fragile ego, where the initial sparks of The Warrior
and The Caregiver, though in their defensive and wounded form, begin to lay the
foundation for her later journey.
Next, the Journey Stage serves as a process of Purification, which Nora
actively cleanses herself of the burdens of her past. This analysis reveals the core
of Nora's metamorphosis. She actively explores possibilities as The Seeker, a search
that consistently leads her to The Destroyer, whose purpose is to shatter her illusions
of a perfect life. From this destruction, The Lover rises to reconnect her with
65
genuine love and connection, ultimately empowering her as The Creator, shifting
from passive victim to author (I AM ALIVE) of her own destiny.
Finally, the Return Stage signifies Nora's Rebirth as an integrated
individual. the analysis shows how Nora integrates all her lessons to become a
whole Self. She embodies The Ruler by taking full responsibility for her life, uses
the power of The Magician to transform her reality through perspective, attains the
wisdom of The Sage by embracing uncertainty, and ultimately, finds freedom in the
joy of being The Fool. This sequence demonstrates that the archetypes serve as a
roadmap for Nora's individuation process.
The findings also confirm that The Midnight Library functions as a modern
myth, addressing contemporary issues such as mental health crises and the paralysis
of the "paradox of choice," yet offering solutions rooted in the ancient psychological
pattern of the hero's journey. This demonstrates that the archetypal framework
remains a highly relevant tool for understanding the human condition in the modern
era. The novel suggests that the way out of despair lies not in finding a perfect life,
but rather in a transformative inner journey that integrates all parts of ourselves.
