It includes components such as wages, rent, interest, and profit, and can be measured using production, income, or expenditure methods. While it serves as an important indicator for economic growth and policy making, it has limitations including data collection challenges and exclusion of unpaid work.

Project on National Income

Introduction
National Income is one of the most important concepts in economics. It measures the total value of
all final goods and services produced by a country in a given financial year. It helps to understand
the economic performance and prosperity of a nation. It represents the total earnings received by
citizens of a country, including wages, rent, interest, and profit. The study of national income helps
in analyzing how wealth is created and distributed in the economy.

Meaning and Definition

National income refers to the total income earned by the factors of production (land, labor, capital,
and entrepreneurship) of a country during a specific period, usually one year. Definitions:
- Alfred Marshall: “The labor and capital of a country, acting on its natural resources, produce
annually a certain net aggregate of commodities, material and immaterial, including services of all
kinds.”
- Simon Kuznets: “National income is the net output of commodities and services flowing during
the year from the country’s productive system into the hands of ultimate consumers.”

Components of National Income

1. Wages and Salaries: Income earned by workers and employees.
2. Rent: Income from ownership of land and property.
3. Interest: Earnings from investments or lending capital.
4. Profit: Income earned by entrepreneurs.
5. Mixed Income: Income earned by self-employed individuals.

Methods of Measuring National Income

There are three main methods used to calculate national income:

(i) Production Method: Measures the total value of final goods and services produced in the
economy.
National Income = Value of Output – Intermediate Consumption

(ii) Income Method: Adds up all incomes earned by factors of production, such as wages, rent,
interest, and profits.

(iii) Expenditure Method: Sums up all expenditures on final goods and services:
NI = C + I + G + (X - M)
Where, C = Consumption, I = Investment, G = Government expenditure, (X - M) = Net exports.
