Chapter One: The Cracking Seal

The cavern had been silent for a thousand years. Silent, except for the heartbeat.

Deep beneath black stone, where no sunlight had ever reached, something pulsed.
Slow. Patient. Waiting.

A thin fracture split the ancient seal that bound the great prison. From within, a
voice stirred—low and rasping, like fire smothered in ash.

"Soon..."

Dust fell from the ceiling. The runes carved by forgotten sorcerers flickered,
fighting to hold. Their light was weak now, faint as dying stars.

A hand pressed against the stone from the inside—long, clawed fingers, black as
shadow.

The creature’s true name had been erased from history, but whispers still feared
him. To some he was The Devourer, to others The Lord Below. But long ago, when
he had walked the earth in fire and smoke, they had called him Azarkoth.

And tonight, his chains trembled.

Far above the cavern, in a quiet wizard’s household, a boy stirred in his sleep. He
dreamt of a door cracking open, of a shadow spilling across the world. He did not
know the name Azarkoth— not yet.

But soon, he would.

Chapter Two: The Wrong Kind of Magic

Sunlight spilled through the crooked windows of the Willowmere cottage, catching
on jars of herbs and stacks of spell-books that threatened to topple at the slightest
breeze. The air smelled faintly of ink, candle wax, and something burning.

"Not again..." groaned Mother.

At the center of the kitchen, a boy stood with soot on his face and sparks still
popping from the wand in his hand. A small, twitching frog sat on the table—except
it had two tails and was glowing faintly purple.

"I was trying to turn it into a teacup," said Eryndor. His voice was half-defensive,
half-resigned. "It almost worked this time!"
"Almost," his older sister said sweetly, sprinkling powdered sugar on her breakfast
roll, "means it didn’t." She flicked her fingers and, with effortless grace,
transformed the frog back to normal before it croaked in outrage and hopped away.

Eryndor’s father chuckled from behind his newspaper. "You’ll find your strength,
boy. Every wizard does."

But Eryndor wasn’t so sure. In a family of dazzlingly talented spellcasters, he felt

like a spark trying to compete with a bonfire.

Still, today was different. Today, a letter lay on the table, sealed with silver wax.
The crest upon it bore the mark of the Arcanum Academy—the most powerful
school of magic in the realm.

And when Eryndor broke the seal, the strange dream from the night before
returned to him in a shiver: a door cracking open, a whisper in the dark, and a
name he did not know—Azarkoth.
