Crankshaft Phase Diagrams & Firing Orders

The document outlines a tutorial with three questions focused on the design and analysis of crankshaft phase angles and firing orders for various engine configurations, including four-cylinder inline, 45° vee two-cylinder, and 180° opposed four-cylinder engines. Each question requires drawing crank phase diagrams, determining firing orders for both four-stroke and two-stroke cycles, and calculating shaking forces, torque, and moment balance conditions. The tutorial emphasizes achieving even firing for each stroke cycle in the engine designs.

Question 1
a) Draw a crankshaft phase angles and crank phase diagram for a four-cylinder inline engine with 0,
90, 270, 180˚ crankshaft and determine all possible firing orders and select the best arrangement to
give even firing for each stroke cycle for;
(i) Four-stroke cycle
(ii) Two-stroke cycle
b) Calculate the shaking force, torque, and moment balance conditions through the second harmonic
for the engine design.

Question 2
a) Draw a crankshaft phase angles and crank phase diagram for a 45˚ vee, two-cylinder engine with a
0, 90 crankshaft and determine all possible firing orders and select the best arrangement to give even
firing for each stroke cycle for;
(i) Four-stroke cycle
(ii) Two-stroke cycle
b) Calculate the shaking force, torque, and moment balance conditions through the second harmonic
for the engine design.

Question 3
a) Draw a crankshaft phase angles and crank phase diagram for a 180˚ opposed, four-cylinder engine
with 0, 180, 180, 0˚ crankshaft and determine all possible firing orders and select the best
arrangement to give even firing for each stroke cycle for;
(i) Four-stroke cycle
(ii) Two-stroke cycle
b) Calculate the shaking force, torque, and moment balance conditions through the second harmonic
for the engine design.
