DIFFERENT METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA

The topic about the different methods of collecting data in research has
given me a deeper understanding of how important proper data gathering is
in producing accurate and reliable research results. Before studying this
lesson, I thought research was simply about gathering information from
books or the internet, but now I realize that collecting data is a careful and
systematic process that requires planning and the right method. Data
collection methods are essential because they determine the quality of the
findings, and they must be appropriate to the research problem and purpose.
Some of the methods I learned include survey or questionnaire, which is a
commonly used method where researchers ask a set of structured questions
to many respondents. I learned that it is easy to administer and analyze,
especially for quantitative research. Another method is interview, which can
be structured, semi-structured, or unstructured. Interviews allow researchers
to collect detailed answers and gain deeper insights from individuals. There
is also observation, where the researcher collects data by watching people,
events, or situations in their natural setting. This method is often used in
classroom research or behavioral studies. Another method is experiment,
which is usually used in scientific research to determine cause-and-effect
relationships by controlling variables. In addition, document or record
analysis involves gathering data from existing records such as school reports,
government documents, and archives. Lastly, I learned about focus group
discussion (FGD). which collects data from a group of people to gather
opinions and shared experiences about a topic. Through this topic, I realized
that choosing the right method depends on the nature of the study, available
resources, and target respondents. This lesson helped me appreciate that
research is not just about answering questions but also about following a
process that ensures credibility and truthfulness. I now understand that as a
future researcher, I must collect data honestly, avoid bias, and respect
ethical standards to produce meaningful and dependable research results.
