The Pot
Mullah Nasreddin was a wise man who lived in Persia several hundred years ago. Nasreddin once borrowed a pot
from his friend. The next day, he gave the pot back to the friend, and also gave him another smaller pot. The friend
looked at the small pot, and said, ‘What is that?’
‘Your pot gave birth while I had it,’ Nasreddin replied, ‘so I am giving you its child.’
The friend was glad to receive the extra pot, and didn’t ask any more questions.
A week later, Nasreddin borrowed the original pot from the friend. After a week passed, the friend asked Nasreddin
to return it.

A Discovery
Ramana Athreya is an Indian birdwatcher. He recently made a rare discovery. Ramana spotted a brand new species
of bird. He found the small, colourful bird in a forest.
In the summer of 2006, Ramana studied the bird closely. He took photographs, made notes and also collected feathers
of the bird. When all these were presented to scientists, they agreed that this was indeed a new species. Ramana was
the first to discover a new type of bird in India in the past 50 years.
There was a tribe called Buguns near the area where Ramana found the bird. He named the bird after them. Ramana
and a team of scientists plan to do more research and look for new types of animals. They are excited about the idea
of discovering new types of butterflies, reptiles, insects and plants.

Chameleons are members of the lizard family. But their special features make them different and interesting creatures.
Chameleons are most famous for their ability to change colour to blend with the surroundings.
The name chameleon comes from a Greek phrase that means ‘ground lion’. Chameleons live in warm places, and
there are about 160 types of chameleons around the world.
What we notice first about a chameleon are its eyes. These eyes can rotate and separately observe two different
objects simultaneously. It means that a chameleon can see all round: it can look in the front, behind and sideways
without turning. What is more, its eyes are stereoscopic. That is, it can see things in 3D!
Chameleons eat insects. They have special tongues which shoot out rapidly from their mouth and pull in the prey
before it can move. The tongue of a chameleon is longer than its body and is so fast that we cannot follow it with our
eyes.
How do chameleons change their colour? Their outer skin is transparent, and beneath that are special cells that
lie in layers. These cells, called chromatophores, can reflect light in many ways. The chameleon’s colour changes
depending on what colour the special cells reflect.
What does it mean if we call a person a chameleon? It means that the person changes his/her opinion too often and
cannot be trusted. Not exactly a compliment!

I was woken up by the terrible heat of the fire burning my belly. The only way I could escape the heat was to take my
badger form and run away. I saw in the room a bald-headed old man who shouted ‘ho-ho’ when he saw me change
my form. He was very frightened. Some more bald-headed men rushed in hearing the old man’s cries. These men
were young. They chased me around the room and I didn’t notice the things that were falling down and breaking as
I ran over them. I am sure the room became a huge mess.
The young men finally caught hold of me. They put me in a dark room. The room was so dark and smelled so terrible
that I almost fainted. Then I returned to my kettle form and lay there.
The next day, someone carried me to a room filled with all sorts of old things: utensils, furniture, lamps, bottles and
tools. When I opened my eyes, it was night. A lean man with a moustache was sleeping on a cot. He was a friendly
man because he did not beat me or shut me up in a dark smelly room. So I showed him my talents: dancing, tight-
rope walking and my specialty of turning into a kettle and back into a badger.
My shows with my master were very successful. People who came to see me were all amazed. I was very happy to see
children enjoying themselves. I had a great time doing shows.
My master grew rich, and he always treated me nicely. As he got old he wanted to retire from his show business. I was
sad at first, but then I realized that it was getting difficult for him to run the business.
When my master decided to send me back to the temple, I became so sad that I did not speak for a week. I had no
other options but to go to the temple and the old man. I remained a kettle there. I never turned into a badger, because
I knew the people of the temple did not appreciate that. I have stayed like that ever since, hoping that some day I
would get a loving master.
D1. 1. (a) the priest (b) the priest’s pupils (c) the tinker
2. The keg
3. Yes, he liked the new master.
4. False
5. The kettle badger was willing to go back, but he was sad to leave his master.

‘Master, there’s a treasure in your land!’
‘Silent! You idiot! Somebody will hear.’
‘Master, let’s take this treasure home.’
‘Don’t be a fool. We’ll come back at night to take it,’ said the trader.

ANSWER KEY: SUPPLEMENTARY
READER
general guidelines
1. Remember that the objective of this reader is to supplement the reading of students, expose them
to good stories and to inculcate reading habit.
2. Do not attempt to treat the stories given in this reader as you did in the coursebook.
3. Alternate the reading of stories; sometimes silent reading and sometimes aloud.
4. Get the students to recite the poems in a chorus.
5. Involve as many students as possible in reading the stories.
6. Do not tell the students the meaning of the words or ask them to look up a dictionary. They
should be encouraged to infer the word meaning. Tell them how to do so.
7. Once a story has been read in class, ask the students to attempt the exercises on their own,
preferably in a separate notebook. These should be checked by the teacher to maintain the
seriousness or else the students will not do them properly. The teacher could even ask the students
to do just a few questions.
8. The textual questions (given in Exercise A) should be done orally.
9. Get the activities like role-play, acting, etc. done in the class. The ones related to writing should be
done independently by the students.
10. Ensure that the books from which the excerpts have been taken are available in the class/school
library.
11. Discuss some of these stories so that you arouse the students’ curiosity in the book and lead him/
her to read them.
12. Aim at getting the maximum number of students hooked on to reading in order to improve their
proficiency in English. Read out an excerpt from any of the recommended books to arouse their
curiosity but do not read out the entire chapter.
13. The entire list of suggested reading should not be given together. It will appear to be a massive and
formidable assignment and will kill the interest.
14. Ensure that the stories in the supplementary reader are evenly spaced out. Do one story from the
supplementary reader after three chapters from the coursebook. This will give the students time to
catch up on their reading at an enjoyable [Link] can continue to motivate them while you are
doing the coursebook with them.

be paper reading based on that book, group discussion on characters, or ask them to think of a
different way to end the story.
16. Then give them the name of other books by that author.
17. If the students depend on the school/class library for reading books, divide the class into
the number of books available and let the students read different books by the same author,
simultaneously.
