Signals and Systems Simulation Guide

The document outlines a simulation assignment for the Signals and Systems course at NIT Calicut, requiring students to use software to analyze periodic waveforms. Students must derive Fourier series for given signals, plot them, and discuss Gibb's phenomena, along with approximating a rectangular pulse using its Fourier transform. The report is to be submitted by October 31, 2025, in a specified format.

EC2001E - Signals and Systems

Simulation - 01

Use software/language of your choice (scilab, python etc.) to do simulations. A pdf

report file (preferably using Latex) containing the procedure, code, results and inference is
to be uploaded in eduserver. Name your report like YourName [Link]. Due date is
Friday, 31st October 2025.

1. (a) Consider the periodic square wave x1 (t) shown in figure 1. Derive the trigonometric
P
∞ P

Fourier series of this signal x1 (t) = a0 + an cos(ω0 n) + bn sin(ω0 n)
n=1 n=1

(b) Plot the series with (i) only the first harmonic (ii) the first 5 harmonics and (iii)
the first 50 harmonics for t ∈ [−2, 2] and interpret the results.
(c) Write a note on the Gibb’s phenomena observed in part(iii) of the plot above

2. Repeat Qn.1 for x2 (t) in figure 2.

3. Repeat Qn.1 for x3 (t) in figure 3.

4. (a) Consider the rectangular pulse x4 (t) = rect(t) below. Look at its Fourier transform
X4 (ω).
(b) Approximate the signal x4 (t) using X4 (ω). Plot the approximated signal x˜4 (t) and
the original x4 (t) in the same figure. Also show more plots to see how it gets
approximated more finely.

(c) Plot the mean square error (MSE) between original and the approximated signal
