PASSAGE 1

STAYING CLOSE, EVEN FROM FAR AWAY

Close friendships are very important in many cultures. A good friend is someone you can trust,
share your feelings with, and rely on in difficult times. But what happens when life takes you to
different places?
Today, people often move away for work, study, or family reasons. Even when friends live in
different cities or countries, many still try to stay connected. They send messages, make video
calls, and remember birthdays. These small actions help keep the friendship strong.
In some cultures, staying in touch shows that you truly care about the relationship. It is not just
about spending time together — it is about making an effort to stay close, no matter the distance.

19
Of course, long-distance friendships can be hard. People are busy, and time zones may be
different. But strong friendships survive because both people want to keep the connection.
Good friends understand that you don’t have to talk every day. What matters is being there when
it counts, listening with care, and sharing life’s moments — big or small.
In the end, friendship is about more than distance. It’s about keeping each other in your heart,
even when you’re far apart.

1. Why do people try to maintain contact with friends who live far away?
A. Because they are afraid of losing their phone numbers
B. Because they value the relationship and want to maintain it
C. Because keeping old friends is easier than making new ones
D. Because they don’t have many other things to do
2. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. Many friends try to keep in contact by sending messages and video calls.
B. Long-distance friendships can be hard because of busy schedules.
C. Good friends must talk every single day to stay close.

3. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that __________

PASSAGE 2
HOW TO RECOGNIZE A GIFTED CHILD

All parents believe their children are special. But how can we know if a child is truly gifted? Experts
have created a checklist of signs that can help parents decide if their child may be highly intelligent.
Gifted children often have a large vocabulary, love reading, and ask many questions about how
things work. They are perfectionists and like to work alone. They also show interest in adult topics
such as politics, religions, or world events.
In addition, these children are creative, sensitive, and confident. They often enjoy humor and can
stay positive in hard situations. They want to improve themselves and do not always follow rules
unless they believe in them. They are usually comfortable speaking with adults and are responsible
and adaptable.
If your child shows many of these traits, it may be helpful to contact a group that supports gifted
children. These groups offer advice and give gifted children a chance to meet others like them. For
many children, it’s the first time they feel understood and no longer different from their peers.

4. In order to understand whether a child is highly intelligent, you should ________

A. compare his or her characteristics with the checklist given.
B. ask the child many questions about different things.
C. check if the child always follows school rules.

PASSAGE 3
FAMILY LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES

Family life in the U.S. has changed over time. Sixty years ago, most wives stayed at home. They
were called “housewives” and were responsible for cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the
children. Husbands worked outside and came home tired, doing little housework and spending little
time with their kids.
Today, many women have jobs. They also come home tired and don’t have time to do all the
housework. So, who does it now? In many families, husbands and wives share the housework. They
may take turns cooking or doing the laundry.
Childcare has changed too. In the past, grandparents often helped, but now families usually live far
away. Parents often have to pay for babysitters or day-care centers, which are expensive and only
affordable for well-paid couples.
Some companies support parents by allowing them to work part-time. This helps them spend more
time with their children. Some men even stay home to take care of the kids — they are called
“househusbands.”
These changes help families. Fathers understand their children better, and couples may understand
each other more as they share responsibilities at home.

7. The word 'affordable' in bold in paragraph 3 is CLOSEST in meaning to _______.

A. cheap enough to pay for B. easy to find
C. available for everyone D. necessary to buy

9. According to the passage, some companies help parents by _______
A. letting grandparents take care of children.

D. encouraging both parents to share housework.

answer to each of the questions.

PASSAGE 1
LOST IN VENICE

Last spring, I visited Venice with two of my friends. It was our first time in the city, and we were
fascinated by its narrow streets, bridges, and canals. After lunch on the second day, we decided
to explore the city without using a map. “Let’s just wander and see where we end up,” one of us
suggested.
At first, it was exciting. We discovered hidden squares, small bookstores, and even a local art
market. But after walking for over an hour, we realized we had no idea where we were. Our
phones had low battery, and none of us spoke Italian well enough to ask for directions
confidently.
Eventually, we found a small café and asked the owner for help. He was very kind and drew us a
little map on a napkin. Thanks to him, we managed to return to our hotel just before sunset.
Although it was stressful at times, getting lost helped us see a side of Venice we might have
missed otherwise. It reminded me that sometimes the best memories come from unexpected

We carried backpacks with food, water, and warm clothes. On the first day, the weather was
sunny and the view was amazing. We walked through forests and crossed small rivers. We even
saw wild deer!
But on the second day, things got more difficult. It started raining, and the path became slippery.
At one point, we almost got lost because the signs were unclear. Luckily, one of us had a map
and a compass, so we found our way back.
Even though it was challenging, we didn’t give up. At the top of the mountain, we saw the
clouds below us—it felt like we were on top of the world. It was cold, but the feeling of success

by foot. It was tiring, but the view was amazing - green forests and fresh mountain air.
During the two weeks there, I worked with a team of volunteers from different countries. We
mixed cement, carried bricks, and painted walls. It was hard work, but we laughed a lot and shared
many stories. What touched me most was the kindness of the villagers. Even though they didn’t
have much, they offered us food and treated us like family.

IV. READING
Read the following passages and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.

PASSAGE 1
A HOTEL UNDER THE SEA

Want to sleep under the sea? The company Planet Ocean has plans for an exciting underwater
hotel, which they hope to build in locations all over the world. The hotel won’t be large, with only
12 guest rooms, plus a restaurant. Guests will get to the hotel in a lift – so no diving or getting
wet! The hotel will float 10 metres under the ocean, although it will be attached to the sea bed to
prevent it from moving too far. Because it won’t be very deep under the water, the sun will shine
down and provide light. Guests will get great close-up views of the fish and other sea creatures,
which won’t be bothered by the hotel and so won’t make any effort to avoid it. The hotel’s design,
with clear plastic walls, means guests will be able to see the sea and all the creatures that live there
around, above and below them in their rooms. They will almost get the feeling that they are
swimming in the ocean. The luxury rooms will have a shower, TV and even the internet. The
restaurant will serve high quality meals. As you might expect, Planet Ocean wants to encourage
people to eat less fish, so guests won’t find any on the menu. What’s more surprising is that the
atmosphere will be silent, so guests will have to imagine the sound of the ocean around them.

1. What do we learn about the hotel?

A. It will be located deep under the ocean without any access to sunlight.
B. Its lights will not shine into the sea so guests can see the fish.
C. It will only have a small number of rooms.
D. Fish and other sea creatures will be scared of it.
2. How will guests get to the underwater hotel?
A. By diving down from a boat
B. In a lift, so they avoid getting soaked
C. By swimming through an underwater tunnel
D. In a small submarine taxi
74
3. Why won’t guests find fish on the restaurant menu?
A. Because the hotel is too deep to catch
B. Because many guests are allergic to sea food
C. Because Planet Ocean supports the idea of eating less seafood
D. Because the kitchen cannot cook seafood under water

LIFE IN SPAIN

countryside. We’ve both always loved Spanish culture and have spent many holidays in Spain.
Five years ago, we decided to give up our jobs in London, sell our house and move to a small
village in the south of Spain.
We thought it would take months to get organized, but in just three months, we’d sold our home,
found a house to rent, booked our ferry and said goodbye to our friends. We were so excited to
move!
At first, we thought we’d stay here for a year, but when we arrived on a beautiful September
evening, we were amazed to realize immediately that we wanted to stay longer. The owners of our

HEADTEACHER MARY COLLINS TALKS ABOUT HEALTHY SCHOOL DAYS

Since I took up my role of Head at Franley Junior School, I have been keen to educate our children
on the importance of developing healthy habits. I started by working with our restaurant manager
to come up with tasty new menus that contain lots of healthy ingredients. We change the menu
from Monday to Friday to encourage the children to try different things and keep unhealthy fried
food to a minimum. The children have enjoyed the meals and eat a wide range of fruit and
vegetables.
We’ve also rented an area of land near the school for a vegetable garden and made gardening a
part of the school curriculum. Children now prepare the ground for planting, plant the seeds and
watch as these turn into healthy fruit and vegetable plants. We’re planning to create a child-
friendly kitchen so our pupils can discover the pleasure of cooking. I believe all this gives the
children an understanding of where our food comes from and very important skills that will stay
with them for life.
