STUDY CASE
The study case for Boardicle Teacher Training is delivered by Nouval Ahmad. He gets his certificate for
coaching and training in Singapore. His focus is on NLP which is derived from Neuro Linguistic
Programming. The program is about how we communicate in the psychological point of view. Coach
Nouval is divided the training into 5 main parts as follows.
Part 1 : Everything is about people
(Source : How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie, 1936)
In the term of communication, we are always dealing with people. Especially as a teacher, if we have
a good grasp of communication, it is easy for us to do learning activities and share the materials with
the students. Also, we can make the students like us, agree with us, listen to us, and accede to us.
There are some steps to get it done.
- Step 1 : technique of handling people
People like to be liked. Praise, appreciation, and getting the stage are some things that the people
want. Related to this, there is a survey about 6 human needs. It says that the number 3 of human
needs is about needing for significance feeling. That is why people love compliments.
- Step 2 : making a good impression
Based on video of Tony Robbins from platform Youtube, people like people who are like
themselves. We can call it mirroring. Before we are doing it, we need to know our audience first.
Then, we can build rapport to connect with people. Please take a note that in order to know our
audience and enter another person’s model of world, we ought to create similarities and reduce
differences. The tips of it are:
• Genuine
• Smile
• Listen
• Remember the name
• Make them (the audience) important
- Step 3 : make people agree with you
To bring it, we should win people’s heart with compliment and avoid criticize in public. Besides, we
are able to use assertive communication in which give questions to make people talk more about
their thoughts before we convey ours. The questions should not be in the form of yes-no questions.
- Step 4 : influence people. And, please adapt with people.
Everyone has their own perspective about everything. We do not have to judge them or consider ours
are the right one.
Part 2 : The art of story telling
(Source : Craig Valentine, The Winner of Toastmaster World Champion of Public Speaking in 2003)
The aim of story telling is to convince and listen more to our counterparts. As a teacher, we have also
to be good at storytelling to make our students engaged and stayed with us. In order to make a
fascinating story telling, we can lay on the following skills.
- Put dialogue
Please do not put to much narrative because dialogue makes the story more alive.
- Stop and pause
Stop and pause can be used to keep the audience focused or get their focused back when the
audience feel bored or sleepy with our session.
- Put jokes
Rules of 3 is common pattern to make stitched jokes, with a relevant topic for sure.
- Invite the audience inside
Please describe detailed location, smell, and surrounding so that the audience is able to feel the
ambience of the story.
Part 3 : Make people agree with you
Someone says that “The meaning of your communication is the responses you get”. In teaching and
learning activities, when we are facing unsuitable responses from the students, it might be something
unclear from the way we communicate with them because a great communicator is the one who is
responsible for the result they get. Communication is not only speaking, the body also takes important
part.
- Eyes
When we are having conversation and want to convince people, we have to look in the eye. The
more eye contact you make, the more connection you made.
- Mouth
In saying things, we have to pay attention on the mouth. We should open our mouth wide to have
clear articulation on what we are talking. In addition, we can have smiles so that the audience are
able to feel the spirit we bring to them.
- Hands
How we move our hands in appropriate ways which in not too much also has big impact in
conveying our thoughts and meanings.
- Tonality/voice projection
It relates to the volume of our voice. We have to be aware the time on which uses higher volume
to build the enthusiasm of the audience or lower volume to emphasize serious topic.
- Postures
Whether we are teaching offline or online, our postures have to show our confidence in delivering
the materials. The way we are standing when we have offline class and the way we are sitting when
we have online class takes part on our communication skills.
Part 4 : Tools for online learning
Changing the way of communication in the world are very developed rapidly. Hence, we also need to
adapt with it because we are living in the present. In the teaching and learning activities, as a teacher,
we have to deal with the sophisticated tools in order to support our lessons because everyone is going
digital nowadays.
- Communication tools : Zoom, Cisco Webex, Google Meet, WhatsApp, Skype, and Microsoft Team
- Collaboration tools : Padlet, Miro, Kahoot!, Google Aps for Education, and Slido
- Presentation tools : Freepik, Canca, Giphy, SlidesGo, Removebg, Pngtree, and Prezi
- Equipment : dress well, Laptop/Notebook, Headphone/Headset/Earphone, Microphone, Ring light,
Green screen background
- Music setting : appropriate music as background of the online teaching and learning activities,
enhance the student’s' mood
Part 5 : Coaching and NLP skills
(Source : Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins, 1991 and How to Win Friends & Influence People
by Dale Carnegie, 1936)
A good communication process is when we are able to convince people with words. In order to achieve
these in a class, teacher should build rapport to enter the students’ model of world. As a teacher, we
can observe as much as possible the similarities between the teacher and the students for value and
topic of conversation. Furthermore, we are pleased to practice the art of framing. It is one of the
examples for NLP so as to change from negative point of view to positive point of view. As the matter
of the way to influence people, we can bring them up the solution for their problems or issues. To give
the solution, we ought to emphasize our counterparts’ feelings by saying “I understand what you are
feeling about”. Then, we change the negative point of view into something beneficial. In addition,
dealing with NLP skills, there are some of them that we can use in a class as mentioned below.
- Cause & Effect Implied : reasoning
- Lost Performative : changing into third person of point of view
- Mind Reading : knowing things by saying “I know what you feel” and “I understand …”
- Tag Question : turning uncertainty question into certainty of the statement for positive answer
- Comparative Deletion : comparing statement with general truth, not specific by mentioning names
or brands
- Double Binds : giving clear 2 or more choices, don’t let them answer without any choices
