Understanding Roots, Mixed Numbers, and Exponents

The document explains the concepts of square roots and cube roots, including how to solve them and the rules regarding negative numbers. It also covers the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of mixed numbers and fractions, as well as the properties of exponents, including the product rule and quotient power property. The document concludes with a brief farewell.

A square root is the number that must be multiplied by itself, or squared, in order to get a certain

answer.

There are three parts to a radical, the radical symbol, the index, and the argument/radical. A
square root does not need to show the index of 2.

Now I will demonstrate how to solve a square root.

A cube root is the number that must be multiplied by itself twice, or cubed, to get your desired
answer.

Now I will demonstrate how to solve a cube root.

If 2 or more numbers are being added or subtracted under the same radical symbol then you
must finish the operation before you get the square or cube root.

If there is a negative symbol before the square root radical symbol, then the square root will be
negative, this also applies to the cube root. You cannot find the square root of a negative
number. The cube root of a negative number can be found, and it will be negative.

Next I will discuss the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of mixed numbers.

When adding or subtracting mixed numbers with the same denominator, you can simply add
and subtract the whole number and fraction parts normally.

When adding or subtracting mixed numbers with different denominators, you must adjust the
numerator and denominator of each fraction in order to get the LCM (Lowest Common Multiple)
in the denominator. Then you can add and subtract the whole number and fraction parts
normally.

You can also convert mixed numbers into improper fractions to add and subtract, and then
convert the answer back into mixed numbers or simplify the answer as you need to.

Now for the multiplication of mixed fractions.

First you need to change the mixed numbers into a improper fractions. After that, you can just
multiply the numerator and the denominator and simplify from there.

Division of mixed fractions.

For division, you need to turn the mixed numbers into improper fractions before you divide.
Next, you need to flip the 2nd fraction, change the operation into multiplication, then you multiply
and simplify then you're done!
Let's move on to exponents.

An exponent is the power to which you raise a number, indicating how many times you will
multiply that number by itself.

The base is the number that you are raising to a certain power.

A base raised to the power of zero is always 1. The base raised to the power of 1 is always
itself.

The negative power property states that there are no negative powers. When a number is raised
to a negative exponent, it becomes a denominator under 1 and the exponent becomes positive.

The product rule states that if you are multiplying 2 exponents with the same base, you can add
the powers.

The quotient power property states that when you divide 2 exponents with the same base, you
can subtract the exponents.

Power of a power

When you raise a power to another power, you can multiply the powers together.

Power of a product

When the product of 2 numbers is raised to a power, you can distribute the exponent among
each of the numbers being multiplied.
