Rational exponents are expressions with exponents that are rational.

5
Simplifying expressions with rational exponents are like solving fractions with the
application of the rules of exponents.

Rational exponents are another way of writing expressions with radicals. When we use
rational exponents, we can apply the properties of exponents to simplify expressions. The power
property for exponents says that (am)n = amn when m and n are whole numbers. This same logic
can be used for any positive integer exponent n to show that a1/n =
.
Rational Exponent : a1/n

.But there is another waySquare roots are most often written using a radical sign,
to represent the taking of a root. You can use rational exponents instead of a radical.
A rational exponent is an exponent that is a fraction. Can’t imagine
raising a number to a rationalexponent? They may be hard to get used to, but rational exponents
can actually help simplifysome problems.

Rewriting Radical Expressions Using Rational Exponents

Just as you can rewrite an expression with rational exponent as radicals, you can
express a radical expression using a rational exponent.
Any radical in the form n axcan be written using a fractional exponent in the
x

n
form a.
The relationship between n axand ax/n works for rational exponents that have a
1

numerator of 1 as well. For example, the radical 43xy can also be written as 4 (xy)3 , since
any number remains the same value if it is raised to the first power. You can now see where
1

the numerator of 1 comes from in the equivalent form of 4 (xy)3. .

.
Radicals and fractional exponents are alternate ways of expressing the same thing. Here
are the examples which can be expressed as an exponent to the power of one-half.

exponents: namely, that the nth root of a number can be written as either nx or xn.
