Heat Transfer Calculations in Heat Exchangers

The assignment consists of three questions related to counter flow double pipe heat exchangers. It involves calculations for heat transfer area, length of the heat exchanger, and various parameters such as heat transfer rate and mass flow rate of water. The scenarios include heating water using superheated steam and geothermal water, as well as oil heating water.

Subject – Heat Transfer

Assignment No-5

Q.1 A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger using superheated steam is used to heat water at the
rate of 10500 kg/hr. The steam enters the heat exchanger at 180o C and leaves at 130OC. The inlet and
exit temperature of water are 30OC and 80OC respectively. If the overall heat transfer coefficient from
steam to water is 814 W/m2OC, calculate the heat transfer area. What would be the increase in area if
the fluids flows were parallel

Q.2 A counter flow double pipe heat exchanger is used to heat water from 20°C to 80°C at a rate of 1.2
kg/s. The heating is to be accomplished by geothermal water available at 160°C at a mass flow rate of 2
kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled and has a diameter of 1.5 cm. If the overall heat transfer coefficient
of the heat exchanger is 640 W/m²K, determine the length of the heat exchanger required to achieve
the desired heating

Q.3 In a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger, water is heated from 25∘C to 65∘C by oil with specific
heat of 1.45 kJ/kgK and mass flow rate of 0.9 kg/s. The oil is cooled from 230∘C to 160∘C. If overall Heat
transfer coefficient is 420 W/m2∘C.

Calculate

a) The rate of heat transfer

b) The mass flow rate of water
c) The surface area of heat exchanger
