Grade 9 Technology: Material Properties

The document outlines key terms related to structures, including definitions of rigid and non-rigid materials, stability factors, and types of forces such as tension, compression, and shear. It also includes a section for knowledge checks with questions about rigid and non-rigid structures, stability of buildings and bridges, and the differences between various types of strain. Additionally, it distinguishes between organic and inorganic materials.

TECHNOLOGY GRADE 9

STRUCTUR

TERMS
● Rigid: stiff and do not bend easily (uses triangulation & gussets)
● Non-rigid: flexible & easy to bend. Collapses easily, has no reinforcement
(eg. fabrics)
● Stable - do not fall over easily.
Size of base (larger, the better) and height of centre of gravity (the lower,
the better) influence stability.
● Stress - force applied to an object.
● Strain - results from stress (buckle, bend, flex, twist or warp).
● Tension - pulling force
● Compression - pushing force
● Shear - tearing force
● Torsion - twisting force
● Types of strain :
○ Plastic - A synthetic material that can be modified into different items
○ Brittle fracture -A sudden breakage of a component order stress but without large damage
○ Elastic - A material that’s able to recover to it’s original State after experiencing
stress or pressure
● Organic - materials made from living organisms
● Inorganic - materials made from non-living items.

1) Name 3 structures that are considered rigid and 3 structures that are
considered non-rigid.

2) Think of the buildings and bridges that you know.

Would you consider them to be stable? Provide reasons for your answer.
Yes , they are able to sustain the weight and force that Equipment,

machinery, and people put on to them and sometimes even vehicles.

3) What is the difference between brittle fracture and elastic strain?
Brittle fracture tends to break under pressure

whilst Elastic strain can recover from stress

when put on it.

4) State the difference between torsion, tension and compression.

Torsion is a twisting force

Compression is more like squeezing

Tension is More like a pulling force.
