Probability Scenarios and Calculations

The document contains a tutorial with various probability problems, including selecting vice presidents from regional managers, choosing supervisors, analyzing survey data on flossing and breakfast habits, and calculating probabilities related to socks and darts. It includes tasks such as creating contingency tables, finding specific probabilities, and completing probability tree diagrams. Each problem is designed to illustrate fundamental concepts in probability theory.

TUTORIAL 5

1. A corporation is proposing to select two of its current regional managers as vice

presidents. In the history of the company, there has never been a female vice
president. The corporation has six male regional managers and four females’ regional
managers. Assume that the 10 regional managers are equally qualified and hence all
possible groups of two managers should have the same chance of being selected as the
vice presidents. Now find the probability that both vice presidents are male.

2. Two supervisors are to be selected as safety representatives within the company.

Given that there are six supervisors in research and four in development, and each
group of two supervisors has the same chance of being selected, find the probability
of choosing both supervisors from the research.

3. In another survey, participants were asked if they regularly floss, and if they regularly
eat breakfast. Among 300 people who participated in the study, 105 regularly floss,
210 regularly eat breakfast, and 90 regularly do both.

a) Create a contingency table to illustrate the data.

b) Find P(students regularly floss)
c) Find P(students do not regularly floss)
d) Find P(students do not regularly floss and eat breakfast)
e) Find P(students regularly floss given also eat breakfast)

4. Natalie has 8 socks in a drawer. 5 of the socks are black and 3 of the socks are white.
Natalie takes out a sock at random and writes its color and puts it back into the
drawer. Then Natalie takes out a second sock at random and writes down its color.
a) Complete the probability tree diagram below.

b) Find the probability that the two socks are same color.
5. Isaac is playing darts. He throws two darts aiming for a Bullseye. The probability
1
Isaac hits the Bullseye on her first throw is . The probability he hits the Bullseye on
4
1
her second throw is .
3
a) Complete the tree diagram.

b) Find the probability Isaac hits the Bullseye at least once.
