ASSIGNMENT 1
Project Summery
To purchase equipment, improve infrastructure and employ personnel to facilitate the development of a high school laboratory. The purpose of this project is to provide necessary equipment to carry out scientific experiments, make science interactive and to facilitate learning in this field. New shelves will be installed, text books will be bought and a small scientific library will put in place. This will give both teachers and students opportunities to look up scientific data from credible sources. The cost of the project is approximately over $800,000 and the duration is for a thirteen month period. The aim as was afore mentioned is to purchase materials and equipment to facilitate the teaching and learning of science. [Link]
2. APPLICANT INFORMATION
ASSIGNMENT 1
Seaforth High School is a government runned academic institution started 1971. It is located in the parish of St. Thomas in the Eastern section of Jamaica. It is situated approximately eight km north west of the capital town Morant Bay, which is in the south eastern end of the parish. The school is situated in the Blue Mountain Valley. It is approximately 100 meters from the east arm of the Morant River. Due to its geographical location, the school is often adversely affected by inclement weather, which results in the blockage of roads, resulting in low attendance and at times closure of school. The school has a population of over two thousand students and operates on a shift system.

To provide an educational environment that will enable students to acquire desirable skills, attitudes, interests and dispositions and to promote and foster the development of ethical, cultural and moral values.
3. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Over the years it is noticed that the students fail to perform well as it relates to the sciences in general. Students find it difficult to gain scientific concepts. To arrest this problem its imperative to obtain the necessary equipment to facilitate the effective delivery of science. In so doing helping students to gain scientific concepts better which would reflect in their performance overall. This would be a good move not for the students only but also the country as a whole. We need more scientists in our country to help us to come up with new discoveries. Who knows these discoveries could help this country in a tremendous way. By this I mean a new invention could bring about a cure to life threatening diseases, invention of new equipment for efficient manufacturing which could cut the cost of production in companies.
ASSIGNMENT 1
Rationale
The thrust to obtain equipment to improve the laboratory capabilities is extremely important. Students should have opportunities to design investigations, engage in scientific reasoning, manipulate equipment, record data, analyze results, and discuss their findings. These skills and knowledge, fostered by laboratory investigations, are an important part of inquiry- the process of asking questions and conducting experiments as a way to understand the natural world. For science to be taught properly and effectively, labs must be an integral part of the science curriculum. Inquiry-based laboratory investigations at every level should be at the core of the science program and should be included in as much lessons as possible. As students move through the grades, the level of complexity of laboratory investigations should increase. At the high school level, all science students should be in the lab or field, collecting data every week while exploring science labs. As students progress through high school, they should improve their ability to collaborate effectively with others in carrying out complex tasks, share the work of the task, assume different roles at different times, and contribute and respond to ideas. With this occurring in our nations schools we are bound to see an increase in the amount of students doing science and also an improvement in the grades overall.
4. PROJECT GOAL AND OBJECTIVES
ASSIGNMENT 1
The goal of this project is to improve the performances of students in science by twenty percent over a one year period. Project Objectives Check the prices of materials to be obtained in the lab. Activities To Be Undertaken Call and visit business places to obtain prices Outputs Expected Invoices will be emailed and collected and an estimate is arrived at.

Contact business places asking for support. Write letters and have discussions with selected business places on what contribution they can offer. Expecting favourable responses from the business community
5. COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The parent teachers association will donate paint and paint the science laboratory. This would be done for free as the parents have bought into the concept of upgrading the lab to facilitate the learning of science.
6. COLLABORATION AND ALLIANCES WITH OTHERS
The parent teachers association will form an alliance with members of the business communities of Seaforth and Morant Bay. Some of these parents either have a business or have cordial relationships with members of the business communities from this they will seek to get assistance in obtaining painting materials. The school will seek to obtain a small bookshelf from Courts Jamaica Limited; this bookshelf will be used to house the books that will be bought to have a mini science library. Due the high cost of books the school will contact Kingston Bookshop along with

Sangsters Bookstore to obtain a total of fifteen text books. The school will also go ahead to purchase other textbooks. The lab needed some new shelves assistance was sought from CHONG WAY HARDWARE and they provided all the materials to build the shelf. These materials were delivered to the school and the wood work department constructed and installed the shelves.
