Advanced Protection and Working with Spirits

Hello everyone, and welcome to my class! Tonight we will be going over many ways to protect yourself
against Spirits, and other entities, including different circles, rites, rituals… and how to utilise these methods
to better work with spirits. If you aren't familiar with spirit work, this class probably isn't for you.
Remember that the best form of protection is knowing what you're getting into. Do your research and have
a plan, don't just be reaching out to the spirits because you're bored. It's very easy for something you didn't
want or didn't expect to weasel their way in if you're giving them that opportunity.

Part 1: Circles
There are many different ways of casting circles, the one I am about to talk about are simply the most common
and effective ones.
This can be as simple or complex as you want. Circles are a very versatile and easy way to protect yourself while
working with spirits. If you are new to spirit work I would make circles a habit, especially if you plan on using
some form of divination to speak with a spirit, or invite them into your space. Generally when dealing with
more powerful entities you should use circles that are confirmed effective. Note: circles are only a temporary
method of protection, if they are used for too long they will drain your energy.

Simple Circle

Casting a circle can be as easy as pointing a finger to the ground and turning 360 degrees (clockwise). You could say
something like, “I cast this circle for my protection. Keep negativity out; let only love come in.” At the end of the
ritual, the witch turns widdershins (anti-clockwise) and says simply, “The circle now fades away.”

Elemental Circle

Step 1. Stand at the center point of your, as yet uncast circle. Breathe deeply three times, making
sure to exhale fully. It’s important not to rush the process. In your mind, be clear on the purpose for the
circle and your intended ritual.
Step 2. Take your wand, or point the index finger of your dominant hand at the floor where you
imagine the perimeter of the circle will be. Turn towards the East, pause and say, “I call the Guardian of East
and the element of Air to watch over this sacred circle.” Take a moment to imagine what a Guardian might
look like. A hooded figure, an angel, a concentrated form of energy, or whatever your imagination comes up
with. Bow your head slightly in acknowledgment.
Step 3. Keeping your wand or finger pointing at the circle perimeter, turn slowly to South. Pause
and say, “I call upon the Guardian of South and the element of Fire to watch over this sacred circle.” Again,
take a moment to visualize the Guardian materializing. Dip your head as before.
Step 4. Now turn to West, pause and say, “I call upon the Guardian of West and the element of
Water to watch over this sacred circle.” In your mind’s eye, see the Guardian take its place and acknowledge
its presence with a slight bow of your head.
Step 5. Lastly, with your wand or finger, turn to the North. Pause a moment and say, “I call upon
the Guardian of North and the element of Earth to watch over this sacred circle.” Visualize the Guardian
appearing and bow your head. The drawing of the circle perimeter is complete.
Step 6. Raise your wand or finger to point upwards above your head. Say, “I call upon the Spirit of
the Universe to watch over this circle, fill it with love, peace and divinity." Imagine a bright beam of light,
emanating from above, and going right through your body, down through to the floor. Visualize your circle
forming a protective sphere around you.
Step 7. When you are done with whatever you cast the circle for, make sure to close it. Raise your
wand or finger to the North and say, “I thank the Guardians of North, the element of Earth, your presence
was a gift, farewell and blessed be”. Do this for every element, going counterclockwise and ending in the
East.
Step 8. When all the guardians have been dismissed say, “The circle is open but never unbroken.”

Sun Circle

Materials:
1) Pink salt
2) Orange peel
3) Orange essential oil
4) Dried flowers
5) Cinnamon powder

Tools:
1) Mortar and Pestle (Optional)

Get a mortar and pestle to crush and grind the ingredients together, preparing them for the ritual.
Leave it out in the Sun and ask the sun for protection, you can ask Jupiter for protection against evil spirits
too.
Ask for their grave and their blessings;

"My lords, I ask for your grace upon thee,

I invoke you to protect me from the shadows who lurk in your light , I ask for love and healing and light
My lord I call upon three to protect not only I but also my family.
Amen."

Moon Circle

Materials:
1) Sea salt
2) Dried lavender
3) Lavender oil
4) Crushed up rose petals
5) Pinch of black pepper

Tools:
1) Mortar and Pestle (Optional)

Get a mortar and pestle to crush and grind the materials, better preparing them for the ritual.
Say the following prayer:

"I call invoke the moon for protection ,

I invoke thee to cast away the evil that hides
My goddess I ask for your blessings
My goddess I ask for your guidance
My goddess I ask for you power
My goddess I ask you for peace.
Amen."

Elemental Circle II

Materials:
1) Charged water (Moon water, Sun water, etc.)
2) Matches
3) A bundle of herbs or incense
4) A compass or a good sense of direction
5) A wand/dagger, if you don't have either of those you can use the index finger of your dominant hand

Draw a circle with charged water from east to north, then do the same with incense.
Recite the following while pointing your wand to each direction:

"I invite the element of air as I cast my circle to guide me."

"I invite the element of fire as I cast my circle to strengthen me."
"I invite the element of water as I cast my circle to calm me."
"I invite the element of earth as I cast my circle to ground me."

Protection Circle II

Materials:
-Candles, wood, crystals, metal, or shells, preferably all of the same kind.
-A lighter or matches if you're using a candle.

0. Cleanse all tools you will be using. This will be outlined next; cleanse all things you don't want retaining
energy.

1. Set up the circle. These can be an actual circle, or a square, or a triangle; any enclosed shape. Circles work
the best. If using candles, light them clockwise; if using other materials, charge them first. (Look into energy
work for directions on that.)
2. Begin. Focus on each object as a point of light, of energy, and imagine them slowly reaching out bands of
light to connect to each other. Slowly and steadily visualize and will this to happen until all points are
connected as one, whole ring.

3. Create the barrier. Visualize and will the linked energy to rise up into a barrier; imagine it pushing away all
energy you don't want and keeping the enclosed space empty. Speak your instructions aloud, if it helps you
focus! Keep imagining, as clearly and precisely as possible, a wall of light raising and closing off the circle,
making a nicely-sized, solid shield.

4. Finish. When you feel like you're done--which may take a while, be patient and don't stop focusing--
slowly relax your concentration. The circle should be risen, and you should do all the work inside of it.

Addend. Closing the circle. When you're done, if using candles, blow them out counter-clockwise;
otherwise, simply disrupt the circle and leave the energy to disperse, maybe cleanse the area if you want.

Part 2: Banishment
There are many ways of banishing spirits, the ones listed below are the most effective ones.

The Qabalistic Cross

1) Begin by standing (or sitting, if that works best) facing toward the East, the direction of the rising
sun and the dawning light. You may either close your eyes or leave them open, whichever works
best for you. Visualize a glowing sphere of white light, about ten inches in diameter, forming
approximately 6 inches above the top of your head. Imagine that its light is blinding, like the sun at
high noon, and that you can't look directly at it without squinting. Take time for this image to
form clearly in your imagination and allow your thoughts to consider that this sphere symbolizes
the Source of all created Being, infinitely high above your worldly worries and ambitions. Raise
your right hand, place the tips of your fingers into this sphere of light, pull the light downward and
touch your forehead, intoning the word "Ateh." This Hebrew word means "Thou art…" and
acknowledges the Being of God.

2) Now slowly move your right hand downward from your forehead and let it hover a few inches
away from your chest. Imagine that the light is moving downward with your hand, and that it
continues straight down through your body till it reaches the region of your feet. (Try to imagine
that your body is semi-transparent and that you can see the line of light moving down through
yourself.) Visualize another sphere of radiant white light forming around your feet to the height of
your ankles, touch your chest with your right hand, and say the word "Malkuth." This Hebrew
word means "The Kingdom," and the sphere at your feet symbolizes the here and now in which you
find yourself, now perceived as filled with the Holy Light of the Divine. Allow this image to
become clear and strong in your imagination, and let your thoughts consider that you are the
bridge between the Upper and Lower Worlds, and that it is through your decisions that the Divine
Light manifests here on Earth. Place both hands at your sides while visualizing the upright line of
the Cross for a while.

3) Still keeping your left hand on your right shoulder, lift your right hand and let it hover a few inches
away from your left shoulder. Imagine that a line of light is streaming from the red sphere on your
right into your left shoulder where a sphere of glowing blue light forms, again about ten inches in
diameter, around and within your left shoulder. Allow this image to become clear and distinct in
your mind, touch your left shoulder with your right hand, and say the words "ve Gedullah," which,
in Hebrew, mean "the Glory." The blue sphere symbolizes your ability to be giving, loving,
compassionate, and forgiving.

4) Still keeping your left hand on your right shoulder, lift your right hand and let it hover a few inches
away from your left shoulder.

5) While keeping your hands crossed over your chest, visualize the horizontal line of light moving
through your chest, connecting the red and blue spheres and intersecting with the vertical line of
the Cross right in the center of your chest. The horizontal line represents the complete spectrum of
your moral/ethical actions, and wherever your consciousness falls on this line will determine
whether your decisions are made for the sake of your Self or Others, and whether they are harsh or
loving. At the point where the two lines intersect, visualize a glowing sphere of yellowish-golden
light forming. This symbolizes Tiphereth on the Tree of Life, the central sephira of Enlightened
Consciousness, that perfectly balances influences from Above and Below, and from the Sephiroth
on either side of it on the Tree. Imagine that the Tiphereth sphere is moving downward slightly
until it is at the same level as your heart & now forming the base of a triangle with the Geburah and
Gedulah spheres. See this clearly and vividly in your imagination, and watch as its light radiates
from within you to surround you and illumine the room in which you stand. Say the Hebrew
words "la olam," which are variously translated as "unto all the ages" or "forever."

6) Conclude by clasping your hands together, as in prayer, and holding them against your chest at the
place where the sphere of golden light manifests. Say the word "Amen." This expresses your
conscious decision to elevate and shift your consciousness to a Center of Perfect Spiritual Balance.

7) Stand for a while and visualize the light of the spiritually orienting Qabalistic Cross glowing
brightly within you. See the light radiate around you like a protective sphere, a Magic Circle of
spiritual protection and illumination. Meditate on the symbolic significance of the ritual you have
just preformed. You are now ready to go about your business from an altered point of view. This is
a perspective that will put you more closely in touch with Higher Spiritual Forces, and make you
more open to their positive influence.

There are many, many versions of this basic Hermetic ritual available in books and online. Many of the
online versions simply outline the steps of the ritual without explaining its inner significance, and so people
perform it mechanically without a true understanding of what it's really all about. That's a shame, because
the Qabalistic Cross (with sufficient familiarity) provides a very potent ritual that clears the mind, calms the
emotions, and enlightens the thoughts and decisions of the magician.
As with all magical rituals, the primary purpose of the Ritual of the Qabalistic Cross is to tune the mind so
that it can begin to pick up higher frequencies. But this beneficial result can never be attained by a person who
merely imitates the motions and sounds made by the magician without any comprehension of their meaning.
Nor will results come quickly even to someone who does begin with an appreciation of the inner significance of
the ritual. It must be done repeatedly on a twice-daily basis, until the mind no longer has to consciously
remember the steps and is thereby freed to concentrate on their Hermetic significance while engaged in the
performance.
Teaching the mind the trick of raising itself above the material concerns which weigh it down so heavily
takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work. Don't be discouraged if you get nothing out of the Ritual of the
Qabalistic Cross for a while. Keep at it. Meditate on it. Write down any inspirations that come to you while
performing it and study them closely. Diligent efforts will be crowned with eventual success.

The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram

Can also be used as a circle.

Begin facing the east. Imagine a sphere of brilliant white light above your head. This is energy from the
Divine Source. With your right index finger draw down this light to your forehead and vibrate the word
Atah (Thou Art). Now draw this light to your groin and vibrate the word Malkuth (The Kingdom)Touch
your right shoulder while visualizing the light drawing up to that area and vibrate the word Ve-Geburah
(and the Power).Touch your left shoulder and again imagine the light there and vibrate Ve-Gedulah (and
the Glory).Visualize the cross of brilliant white light before you. Bring your hands to your chest clasping
them and vibrate Le-Olahm, Amen (Forever, Amen).

Pronunciations are in parentheses. The names are the variations of the names of God.
Stand in the east. With your right index finger begin drawing a pentagram in blue or white light starting at
the earth point (seen in figure above). Make this a large pentagram starting at your left hip sweeping up to
your head, down to your right hip, up to your left shoulder, then to your right and back to the starting
point in the earth (left hip). Vibrate YHVH (Yode-Heh-Vav-Heh). Don't drop your hand. Keep visualizing
the light emitting from your finger as your turn to face each [Link] to the south. Draw the
pentagram as before and vibrate Adonai (Ah-do-nye).Turn to the west. Draw the pentagram as before and
vibrate Eheieh (Eh-hey-yay).Turn to the north. Draw the pentagram as before and vibrate Agla (Ah-gla).

The words are spoken normally except the archangels' names which are vibrated. Vibratory forms of the names
are in parentheses. Imagine the energy of each angel as a bright white or opalescent light. You will stay facing
the east for each angel.

Return to face the east. Visualize an angel before you. Extend both arms in the form of a cross and say
Before me Raphael (Rah-fye-el).Visualize an angel behind you and say Behind me Gabriel (Gah-bree-
el).Visualize an angel on your right and say On my right hand Michael (Mee-kie-el).Visualize an angel on
your left and say On my left hand Auriel (Ur-ee-el)Say "For about me flames the pentagram, and in the
column shines the six-rayed star."Repeat the Kabbalistic Cross.

Different traditions visualize the angels and directions with elements and colors, though some recommend
getting the basic structure down first before attempting to memorize any elemental associations. In fact,
students early on in Golden Dawn history were only given this structure without extra correspondences. They
did not learn these things until later in their studies. The energy of the Divine light and archangels is more
than adequate to banish unwanted energies.

Turn back to the East, and complete the circle of burning light that connects all the pentagrams around
you.
Stand with feet wide apart and arms extended so that your body
forms a pentagram shape. You now call upon the Four Archangels
of the cardinal directions by saying the following"
"Before me, Raphael." (Pronounced "Ra-fi-el.") Raphael is the Archangel of the Sephira Tiphereth and the
element of Air. He is traditionally visualized as a winged being wearing yellow robes and surrounded by
bright yellow light. His right arm is uplifted and he holds a raised sword in his right hand.
"Behind me, Gabriel." (Pronounced "Gah-bree-el.") Gabriel is the Archangel of the Sephira Yesod and of
the element of Water. He is traditionally visualized as a winged being in blue robes surrounded by blue light.
He holds a silver chalice in his right hand.
"At my right hand, Michael." (Pronounced "Mee-ki-el.") Michael is the Archangel of Fire, and is usually
portrayed as a fiery figure robed in bright red with an upraised flaming wand or sword in his right hand. He
cups a bright flame in his left hand.
"At my left hand, Uriel." (Pronounced "Your-ee-el.") Urial is the Archangel of the element Earth. He wears
green robes, carries an assortment of flowers and plants with his left arm and holds his right hand up, palm
outward. In the center of his palm appears an open eye of greenish color. He stands upon a boulder and
beyond him appear green fields and forests.
After saying these invocations, move your feet together and keep your arms extended in a cross-form. Say:
"About me flame the pentagrams, and in the column shines the holy six-rayed star." Imagine the pentagrams
in their various colors blazing around you and see a column of light descending from above your head down
to your feet. Directly in front of you, just above your chest and within the column of light, imagine that a
glowing six-pointed hexagram is formed.
After visualizing the various symbolic elements of the ritual arrayed around you, conclude the GBRP by
once more performing the Qabalistic Cross.

Part 3: Amulet Protection

Wear an amulet imbued with protective properties with spirits. Keep in mind that the pentacles from part 1
can be used as amulets. This can be made of protective stones, or of an object that has had a protective spell cast
on it.
Charge the amulet regularly. This can be done with moonlight, selenite (for stones), sunlight, or personal
energy. If charging using personal energy hold the amulet and envision light being light into the amulet as you
concentrate on imbuing it with protective properties. Make sure your intent is to allow good spirits to stay and
malicious ones to be kept away.
Warning: If you cleanse a spelled amulet do not use sage to cleanse it unless you plan on fully re-spelling the
object. Sage is a neutralizer, all magic will be removed and the item will need to be re-spelled and recharged
before use. Also be aware of any other cleansing method you use to make sure this doesn't happen.

Making an amulet

Amulets and talismans are mostly made of brass and copper, neutral materials that are believed to be able to
absorb and remove negative energy from the body.
It is essential to understand that no object is magical in itself but becomes so once we put energy into it.

It is useful to keep in mind that as we are made of energy, everything in the material world also has a soul
that reflects on the other astral planes, so what we need to do is to join our energy to the object.

1) First, you will have to choose your object; it could be a pendant, a ring, a bracelet, or protective
symbols against negative energy sacred to you, for example, even a stone (even if there is a different
subject for the stones to face). In short, once you have chosen your object of protection, you will
need the help of the elements.
So in a circle on your altar, you will have to put a handful of salt or sand representing the Earth, an
incense stick representing the air, a candle and a cup of water representing the elements Fire and
Water respectively.

2) Concentrate and relax, when you are ready, summon, and invoke the elements the way you usually
do. After that, take your “magic” object and place it on the Earth and say: “May you absorb the
energy of this [Link] the Earth is solid, you can support me and protect me from any
negative energy”

3) Wait for the item to load, then move on to the other item. Then remove it from the ground and let
it smoke to the fumes of incense and say: “May you absorb the energy of the Air and as the Air
takes away,
may you bring and remove any negative energy away from me”

4) Switch to the next item. Heat the object on the flame of the candle (be careful not to burn yourself.
As a precaution, take the object with a small brow or at least something that keeps your hands well
away from the flame). When the object has become burning, say: “How the fire burns and burns
everything may you burn and burn all that may harm me”

5) Go to the last element, the water; completely immerse the object in the water and say: “As the water
hides, cradles and protects may you protect me and hide me from those who will harm me”
6) Now raise your arms to the sky with the object that hangs in your hands and say: “I am energy. I am
made of the same energy as the universe and the Gods are made of. You and I are united by the
same energy, by the same strength. With this breath, I give you life (blow on the object)”

The amulet is ready to protect you, always wear it and you will be safe. Don’t forget to thank and
dismiss the items.

Method II

Materials:
-Items for cleansing and protection circle
-An object you'd like to enchant; something metal, wood, or crystal is best
-A drawn Algiz rune, or a rune for protection from whatever set you'd like; it can be as simple as a drawing in
ink on paper
-A crystal to charge the rune; not necessary, but it can help

0. Cleanse all tools and spaces that you don't want retaining energy. This "sterilizes" them of unknown
foreign energies that could muck with your work; I will assume knowledge of this, but recommend you
look deeper if unfamiliar.

1. Set up a protection circle. There are lots of ways to do it, the way I recommend is to light a
ring/box/triangle of candles, clockwise, and then link the energy of each candle; from there, focusing on
raising it into a shield that deflects energy you don't allow. I recommend looking in-depth into doing this
procedure if you aren't familiar.

2. Within the circle, charge the pre-cleansed protection rune. This will also assume knowledge of how to
charge things; again, look in-depth into energy work if unfamiliar. Essentially, picture energy flowing from
you and into the rune, filling it with light and activating its purpose.

3. Enchant the object. Take the pre-cleansed object you'd like to enchant and place it on or over the rune,
within the circle; keep hold of it. Focus, and imagine the item coming apart: a chain coming undone and
melting back into slag, cloth unravelling into fibre, and etc. Let it reveal its energy structure to you, and
imagine, visualize, its energy being imbued with energy flowing into it from both you and the charged
protection rune. Tell it, out loud if it helps, exactly what you want it to do: shield you from outside energy
you don't allow. Show it visually, strongly focus on and imagine it doing its job. Keep energy flowing in and
keep shaping its purpose until satisfied; then, imagine the object coming back together around the reshaped
energy, and clicking back together firmly.

Part 4: Psychic Defences

Building up your psychic defences with positive affirmations and self care and meditation: This gets left out a
lot, but YOU are a good defense against malicious spirits. If you have confidence in yourself and what you are
doing it becomes a lot more difficult for negative spirits to latch on. Practice self affirmations to help build up
your psychic defenses. Build up your mind through meditation and affirmations like the ones below.

"My mind is a sacred space, no evil may enter"

"I am strong, I will repel evil intent"
"I am protected from harm"
You can make up any affirmation you feel comfortable with so long as your intent is there.

Always "end" the conversation: Make sure to be clear with the spirit when you are done. Don't assume they
are ready to leave. Most will be willing to leave on their own as long as you are clear, others you may need to
be a bit more forceful with. In the case of certain entities you may need to outright kick them out or banish
them. The need to banish is unlikely unless you purposely called on something that you knew you would
need to banish ahead of time (research, remember?), But it can still happen.

When you are done it's always a good idea to cleanse your space.

Part 5: Warding and Grounding

These methods are my personal favourites, there are many different methods out there.

Grounding Method

A personal favorite method of mine for grounding is called Tree Meditation. Find a calm place to sit or relax
in your sacred or work space and breathe deep and steady. While breathing visualize, feel, or simply be aware
of your body. Imagine your body is growing roots that sink deep into the earth, and anchoring you to it.
Feel your legs become strong like wood, as those roots grow and entwine themselves around your legs. As
you feel the energy from the earth rising up, straighten your back- stand tall and proud like a tree. Feel your
crown open as it fills with light that flows down back into the earth and strengthens your roots further.

Warding against Spirits

Most wards aren't physical and are meant for astral and spirit work protection. They are a form of energy
protection that can be physical charms, sigils, or just visualizations.
Physical charms include spell jars/bottles, stones, enchanted objects, and spell pouches. The bottles and
pouches generally include protective herbs and crystal chips, or even whole crystals.
It is a popular belief that wards work best in layers, and I believe this as well. Use more than one line of
defense and you'll go into your spirit work with confidence.
