Numericals (CET003)

Question 1: A member LMNP is subjected to point loads as

shown in fig. 1.
Calculate:
i. Force P necessary for equilibrium.
ii. Total elongation of the bar.
Take E = 210 GN/m2
Figure 1
[Solution: P = 350kN, △L = 0.278 mm]

Question 2: For the bar shown in fig. 2, calculate the reaction produced by the
lower support on the bar. Take E = 200 GN/m2. Find also the stresses in the bars.
[Solution: R2 = 16.5 kN, R1 = 38.5 kN, stress in LM = 350 MN/m2, stress in MN
= 75 MN/m2]

Question 3: Two parallel steel wires 6 m long, 10 mm diameter are hung vertically
70 mm apart and support a horizontal bar at their lower ends as shown in fig. 3.
When a load of 9 kN is attached to one of the wires, it is observed that the bar is 2.4 o
to the horizontal. Find ‘E’ for wire.
[Solution: E = 235 GN/m2]

Question 4: A cast-iron flat, 300 mm long and of 30 mm x 50 mm uniform section,
is acted upon by the following uniformly distributed over the respective cross-
section; 25 kN in the direction of length (tensile); 350 kN in the direction of the
width (compressive); and 200 kN in the direction of thickness (tensile). Determine
the change in volume of the flat. see fig. 4.
Take E = 140 GN.m2, and μ (poisson’s ratio) = 0.25
[Solution: δV = 14.13 mm3]

Question 5: At a point a material under stress, the intensity of the resultant

stress on a certain plane is 50 MN/m2 (tensile) inclined at 300 to the normal of
that plane. The stress on a plane at right angles to this has a normal tensile
component of intensity of 30 MN/m2. See fig. 5.
Find:
i. The resultant stress on the second plane.
ii. The principle planes and stresses.
iii. The plane of maximum shear and its intensity.
[Solution: Resultant stress (δr)= 39 MN/m2, σ1 = 62.52 MN/m2
(tensile) & σ2 = 10.78 MN/m2 (tensile), τmax = 25.87 MN/m2]

Question 5: Shown in figure (6), find the principal stresses

and maximum shear stress in Mpa.

Question 6: A cantilever beam of length 2 m carries the point

loads as shown in fig. (7). Draw the shear force and bending
moment diagrams for the cantilever beam.
