Aerodynamics Simulation of Ahmed Body

The project focuses on simulating the aerodynamics around the Ahmed body, a simplified car geometry, to compare drag coefficient (Cd) values. It involves preparing CAD models, meshing, applying boundary conditions, and running simulations with specific turbulence models and mesh configurations. The study aims to analyze the Cd values obtained and compare them with existing literature, noting variations based on design changes.

Objective
• Objective of this study is to simulate the aerodynamics around
a simplified around car geometry which is well known as
Ahmed body.
• Try to compare the CD value which you get and what is there
in the paper

Problem Statement
• Steps you need to follow
• [Link] the CAD( use space claim for it)
• [Link] the geometry
• [Link] Proper boundary conditions
• 4. Run the simulation (plot Velocity, Pressure, Y+ on the
surface of the car, etc) and also compare the CD

Contind……
• Turbulence model: Transient-state with k-ε model
• Mesh type: Unstructured tetrahedral mesh with
prism layers
• Mesh domain size: 15 × 3 × 1.5 m³
• Mesh cell count: Around 5 million
• y+ value: Between 20 and 100
• Boundary Layer Control: Prism layer mesh (10
layers)

Boundary conditions
• Boundary Conditions Used
• Velocity Inlet: 28 m/s
• Outlet pressure: 0 Pa (atmospheric)
• Reynolds number: 𝑅𝑒=4.29×106Re=4.29×10 6
• Turbulence intensity: < 0.5%
• Ground clearance: 50 mm
• Turbulence intensity percentage = 5
• Turbulence velocity ratio = 10
• Reference values-Area= 0.112

What is Cd Value (Drag Coefficient)?
• The drag coefficient (Cd) is a measure of aerodynamic
drag.
• It varies depending on flap type, position, and angle.
• For the standard 25° Ahmed model, Cd was around
0.2463
• Best reduction was to 0.1942 using a big flap at the side
at 80°, which gave a 21.2% drag reduction
• For the 35° model, best reduction was minor: from
0.1985 to 0.1868 (about 6%)

‘Y+’ value on the surface and cd
• y⁺ between 20 and 100 using a prism layer mesh with 10
layers. This indicates using wall functions, not resolving
the viscous sublayer directly.
• For the standard 25° Ahmed model, Cd was around 0.28–
0.32
