🌟 Introduction
 India’s history saw two major phases of urbanisation:
1. First Urbanisation → Indus Valley Civilization (2500–1500 BCE). Planned
cities, drainage, trade.
2. Second Urbanisation → ~600 BCE in Ganga valley due to agriculture, iron
tools, trade, rise of Mahajanapadas.

🌾 Agricultural Revolution & Urban Growth


 Iron ploughs + irrigation → surplus crops.
 Surplus supported towns, trade, kingdoms.
 Urban centres grew around capitals, ports, temples.

Rise of Mahajanapadas (600 BCE onwards)


 From small janapadas (clans) → larger mahajanapadas (states).
 Total 16 Mahajanapadas.
List of Mahajanapadas:
1. Magadha – strongest, later became Mauryan Empire.
2. Vajji – confederacy of clans, republic style.
3. Kosala – centre: Ayodhya, important in Ramayana.
4. Avanti – capital: Ujjain, strong trading centre.
5. Kashi – wealthy, centre of learning.
6. Malla – republican clans, later divided into small states.
7. Chedi – central India.
8. Kuru – famous for political assemblies.
9. Panchala – known for education centres.
10. Matsya – south of Kuru, Jaipur region.
11. Gandhara – capital: Takshashila, famous university.
12. Kamboja – NW India, famous for horses.
13. Anga – near modern Bihar-Bengal border.
14. Asmaka (Ashmaka) – only southern Mahajanapada (Godavari valley).
15. Surasena – capital: Mathura.
16. Vatsa – capital: Kausambi, trade centre.

👑 Strong States & Northern Empires


 Magadha → most powerful Mahajanapada.
o Rulers: Bimbisara, Ajatashatru.
o Reasons for strength:
 Fertile Ganga plains.
 Iron mines in Bihar.
 Ganga river → transport.
 Elephants in forests → strong army.
 Later became centre for Maurya Empire (Chandragupta Maurya).
 Vajji → ruled by Lichchhavis.
o Unique → Gana-sangha (republican system).
o Decisions made in assemblies.
 Avanti & Kosala → rivals of Magadha but later absorbed.

Towns & Crafts


 Urban centres: temple towns, capitals, ports.
 Craft specialisation: textiles (Varanasi, Kanchipuram), bronze idols (Thanjavur).
 Guilds (shrenis) supported artisans & trade.

 Inland and overseas trade flourished.
 Ports: Surat, Calicut, Tamralipti.
 External trade with Arabia, China, SE Asia.
