EC419b - Power Electronics
Topic- Thyristors and Controlled Rectifiers

Q.1 For designing a rectifier circuit for 7.5 kV, 1000 Amp system, the only thyristors available are
of 500V, 75 Amp rating. Considering a derating factor of 14%, find out the number of thyristors
required and show their arrangement in series/parallel.
Q.2 A single phase half-wave controlled rectifier is operated from a 120 V, 50 Hz supply and the
load resistance value is R=10 . For firing angle of 60o, determine (a) The converter efficiency
(b) form factor, (c) ripple factor (d) PIV.
Q.3 A single phase full-wave controlled rectifier is operated from a 120 V, 50 Hz supply and the load
resistance value is R=10 . If the average output voltage is 25% of the maximum possible
average output voltage, calculate (a) Delay angle (b) RMS and average output current, (c)
average and RMS thyristor currents (d) sketch various voltage & current waveforms.
Q.4 Derive expression for DC and RMS output voltage of single-phase full wave controlled rectifier
that is connected to RL load. Calculate its performance parameters for delay angle of 45o.
Q.6 Explain three-phase semi-converter with the help of circuit diagram. Draw its output voltage
waveform for (a) delay angle  < 30o (b) delay angle  =120o.

Q.9 Explain how a single-phase controlled bridge rectifier can provide variable output voltage for a
constant input. For the following three conditions, draw output voltage and input current
waveforms for a firing angle of 450: (a) Resistive load (b) RL load with continuous current (c)
RL load with discontinuous current.
