PREPARATION AND DISPENSING OF DUSTING POWDER

Aim: To prepare and dispense 20 gm of dusting powder

Principle: Dusting powder is a sterile cutaneous powder containing starch and purified talc. The talc is
sterilized before incorporation with the starch, or the final product is subject to a suitable terminal sterilization
procedure. Dusting powders are applied to the skin for a surface effect such as drying or lubrication. Dusting
powders are usually mixtures of two or more substances in fine powder intended for external use. Starch
possesses binding as well as suitable flow properties which help the powder to flow easily, spread uniformly,
and cling to the skin on application. Talc is a natural mineral substance zinc oxide is a protectant.

Instruments Required: The following instruments will be required for performing the experiment
1. Weighing Balance

Apparatus Required:The following apparatus will be required for performing the experiment
1. Mortar & pestle
2. Sieve shaker

Chemical Required: The following chemicals will be required for performing the experiment
1. Purified talc
2. Starch
3. Zinc oxide

Procedure:

1. Weigh the required quantity of purified talc and zinc oxide.


2. Mix zinc oxide with starch and incorporate purified talc.
3. Mix thoroughly and pass the mixed powder through sieve no.120 to remove gritty particles.
4. After sieving the whole of the powder must be again slightly mixed.
5. Pack the powder to protect it from air, moisture, and contamination.

Dispensing: Transfer the dusting powder into a reclosable perforated plastic container.

Direction: Sprinkle lightly on the affected area. Do not apply on raw orweeping surface. For external use
only.
