Standard Solution Preparation by Titration

The document outlines a performance task in Analytical Chemistry focused on preparing a standard solution through titration. It includes the problem statement, hypotheses, materials needed, objectives, and detailed procedures for preparing a NaOH stock solution and standardizing it using KHP. The task aims to help students understand standardization principles and determine solution concentrations through Titrimetric Analysis.

PERFORMANCE TASK

Preparation of Standard Solution by Titration

INTRODUCTION

In Analytical Chemistry it is customary to express the concentrations of solutions in terms

of normal solution. A normal solution is one that contains one equivalent weight express in gram-
equivalent weight of dissolved substances per liter of solution both in alkali and acidic solutions, this is
done by the neutralization reaction by titration.

[Link]: How to prepare a standard solution and determine its concentration express in
Normality by Titrimetric Analysis.

II. HYPOTHESES: (+) That a solution to be prepared for stock solution completely uniform for a
Standardization or analysis.
(-) That a solution to be prepared for stock solution do not conform with uni-
form for a subsequent standardization or analysis.

III. MATERIALS: NaOH pellets , KHP , Phenolpthalein indicator , distilled water, acid and base
Burette, Erlenmeyer flask . medicine dropper or pipette, burette clamp, stirring
Rod. Beaker -2000ml, Bunsen burner, wire gauze. Tripod, iron stand.

NOTE: The materials to be prepared is intended for the 5 groups for each
Section.

IV. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the activity the student should be able to:

standard solution for stock solution.

2. Determine the concentration of the solution by Titrimetric Analysis. NaOH
[Link] work independently with precautionary measures.

PROCEDURES:

A. PREPARATION A CARBONATE-FREE NaOH STOCK SOLUTION for community

used for 7 – section class which is most convenient for a large group of
students.

inverted beaker or plane mirror, cool under room condition or through a running
tap water.
2. Dissolved the 15g of NaOH pellets needed to prepare a solution with 0.25 N
NaOH solution.

bottles, so that any Na₂CO₃ will settle to the bottom to avoid interference for the
concentration of solution.

4. Keep the bottles tightly covered to prevent against evaporation and consequent
change in concentration.

B. STANDARDIZATION of NaOH solution:

1. Dissolved 0.1g of KHP in a 25mL of H₂O completely in an Erlenmeyer flask,
prepare 2 to 3 sets for three trials.
2. Pour the prepared NaOH solution in a base burette guided with a glass funnel
to avoid spilling to the mark. Record the initial volume. Be sure no air or space
in it.
3. Add a drop of phenolphthalein indicator to the dissolved KHP solution.
4. Start to run down the titrant or the prepared NaOH solution into the
Erlenmeyer flask with dissolved KHP and indicator dropwise, if the color start
to appear to light pink make sure to drop a titrant in dropwise. Use a white
background underneath to distinguish the color appearance. Record the final
volume if the lightest color of pink does not vanish in a longer time.
5. Make another trial to test if it will give the same amount of the same volume
used.
6. Compute for the result of concentration and get its average for the number of
trials made.
