Algebraic Expressions and Operations
Algebraic Expressions and Operations
In this module, we will review about algebraic expressions. These are combinations of
variables, constants, and arithmetic operations. Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses
letters along with numbers and operation symbols to create expressions. It uses mathematical
statements to describe relationships between quantities that may vary over time. In the
description of such relationships, variables and constants are used to represent numbers,
values, quantities, vectors, and many more. Algebra is important in any study of mathematics,
science, engineering and other applied elds of study.

POLYNOMIAL OR NOT?
A polynomial is a special type of algebraic expression. An algebraic expression is considered
polynomial if:
• Its exponent is a positive integer.
• The variables are found in the numerator.
• The variable is not found in the radical sign .
x 2 − 5x + 6 x
The variable is found inside the radical sign.
Example:
Algebraic Expression Number of Terms
2y + 3x – 10 This expression can be divided into 2y, 3x,
-10. The expression has three terms.
In a term, the constant factor is called numerical coe cient while the variable factor is called
literal coe cient. For example, in the term 2abc, 2 is called the numerical coe cient while
abc is called the literal coe cient. A term without a variable is called a constant term.
The degree of the term is the sum of the exponents in every term.
Examples:
Algebraic Degree of the Term
Expression
5x4 The exponent in the term is 4. So, the degree of the term is 4.
-4x6 The exponent in the term is 6. So, the degree of the term is 6.
5abc The exponents are not reflected, but there are variables. It means that
a1b1c1. You add all the exponents, the degree of the term is 3.
5ab3c5 The exponents are 1, 3, and 5. Adding all the exponents, the degree of
the term is 9.
The degree of the polynomial is the highest degree of any of its non-zero terms.
Examples:
Algebraic Expression Degree of the Term Degree of the Polynomial
2x2 – 3x + 5 2, 1, and 0 2
3x2y +10xy – 5xy2 3, 2, and 3 3
2x + 3y 1 and 1 1
2abc 3 3
CLASSIFYING POLYNOMIALS
Cycles are classi ed based on the number of their wheels. A cycle with one wheel is called
monocycle. A cycle with two wheels is called bicycle. A cycle with three wheels is called
tricycle.
Just like cycles, polynomials are also classi ed based on the number of terms.
An equal sign ( = ) separates the two algebraic expressions. In the equation 5x + 4 = 24, the
expression 5x + 4 is called the left-hand side while 24 is called the right-hand side of the
equation.
In solving an equation, you need to nd all the solutions to the equation. These are values that
will make the equation true.
A solution for an equation is any value that makes the equation a true
statement.
2x + 5 = 3x + 10
2(−5) + 5 = 3(−5) + 10
−10 + 5 = − 15 + 10
−5 = − 5 True. -5 is a solution
2x + 5 = 3x + 10
2(2) + 5 = 3(2) + 10
4 + 5 = 6 + 10
9 ≠ 16 False. 2 is NOT a solution.

Algebra is a language which translates verbal phrases into algebraic expressions and algebraic
expressions into verbal phrases. Common verbal phrases are used to translate mathematical
operations.

ADDING POLYNOMIALS
In adding polynomials, we can only combine similar terms.
x2 + 2x +3
+ 2x2 -x -1
3x2 +x +2
2x2 -3x +4
3x2 +2x -1
5x2 -x +3
10x3 -5x2 +x -1
3x2 +3x -5
10x3 -2x2 +4x -6
Example 5: 6x5 + 4x2y3 + 8x3y2 – 5x4y +xy4 and 6x2y3 + 10x4y - 7xy4 + 3x3y2 – y5
SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS
In subtracting polynomials, we can only subtract similar terms. We need to change the sign of
the subtrahend or of the term that has a subtraction sign before the parenthesis.
3x2 +2x -1
x2 +5x -5
The answer is x2 + 5x – 5.
LAWS OF EXPONENTS
The laws of exponents are helpful in simplifying algebraic expressions and in performing
operations or polynomials.
PRODUCT LAW
If x is any non-zero real number and m and n are natural numbers, then
x m ∙ x n = x m+n
It means that when you multiply expressions of the same base, you keep the base
and add the exponents.
QUOTIENT LAW
If x is any non-zero real number and m and n are natural numbers, then
x m−n i f m > n
m
x 1 if m = n
=
xn 1
x n−m
if m < n
This means that when you divide exponential expressions having the same base,
keep the base and subtract the exponents.
510 m7
Example 1: Example 3:
52 m 10
=510 – 2 = 58 Since the exponent in the
denominator is greater than the
exponent in the numerator, then
1 1

the ones with greater exponents.
( 4 ) q 3−1
−64 r 2−1s 5−5 −16r

q2
POWER OF A POWER
If x is any real number and m and n are natural numbers, then
(x ) = x
m n mn
This means that when you raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents and
keep the base.
Example 3: (x ) =x
4 3
Example 1: (10 2)
6 12
= 102(6) = 1012
This means that when you raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents to the
exponents of the base.
(y)

= n

This means that when you raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents to
the exponents of the base. Then, subtract the exponents of the same base.

Using the Tile Method,
In dividing a monomial by a monomial, we need to review the law of exponents. It can be the
quotient rule or the power of a quotient.
When we divide powers, we subtract the exponents of the same base.
If the exponent of the numerator is greater than of the denominator, subtract the
exponents in the numerator. If the exponent is greater in the denominator, subtract the
exponents in the denominator.

Example 1
30x 4 + 35x 6 + 25x 8
Divide:
5x 2

25x 8 + 35x 6 + 30x 4 Step 1. Arrange the powers in descending

25x 35x 6 30x 4 Step 2. Divide each term of the
= + + polynomial by the monomial.
5x 2 5x 2 5x 2 Step 3. Divide the numerical coefficients

Solution:
−21a 7b 6 42a 6b 5 7a 5b 4 Step 2. Divide each term of the
= − + polynomial by the monomial.
−7a 4 b 5 −7a 4 b 5 −7a 4 b 5
7−4 6−5 6−4 5−5 a 5−4 Step 3. Divide the numerical coefficients
