Lesson: Introducing Yourself in Indonesian

1. Greeting (Salam)

In Indonesia, the most common greeting is:

 Halo (Hello)

 Selamat pagi (Good morning)

 Selamat siang (Good afternoon)

 Selamat sore (Good evening)

 Selamat malam (Good night)

2. Introducing Your Name (Memperkenalkan Nama)

To introduce yourself in Indonesian, you can use the phrase "Nama saya..." which means "My
name is..."

Examples:

 Nama saya John. (My name is John.)

 Nama saya Maria. (My name is Maria.)

3. Asking Someone's Name (Menanyakan Nama)

To ask someone their name, you can say:

 Siapa nama Anda? (What is your name?) [formal]

 Siapa nama kamu? (What is your name?) [informal]

Response:

Nama saya... (My name is...) [formal]

Saya... (I am...) Informal

4. Asking someone`s Age (Menanyakan Umur)


To ask someone their Age, you can say:
 Berapa Umur Anda ( How Old AreYou) [formal]
 Berapa Umur Anda ( How Old Are You) [informal]

5. Asking About Nationality (Menanyakan Kewarganegaraan)

To ask about someone's nationality, you can use the phrase:

 Dari mana asal Anda? (Where are you from?) [formal]

 Dari mana asal kamu? (Where are you from?) [informal]


Common responses:

 Saya dari Amerika. (I am from America.)

 Saya dari Jepang. (I am from Japan.)

 Saya orang Indonesia. (I am Indonesian.)

6. Talking About Occupation (Membicarakan Pekerjaan)

A. To talk about your job, you can say:

 Saya seorang dokter. (I am a doctor.)

 Saya seorang guru. (I am a teacher.)

 Saya bekerja di kantor. (I work in an office.)

B. To ask someone's occupation:

Apa pekerjaan Anda? (What is your job?) [formal]

Apa pekerjaan kamu? (What is your job?) [informal]

7. Saying Goodbye (Mengucapkan Selamat Tinggal)

When saying goodbye, you can use:

 Selamat tinggal (Goodbye) [when the person is leaving]

 Sampai jumpa (See you again)

 Dadah (Bye) [informal]

Example Dialogue
Person 1: Halo! Nama saya Ali. Siapa nama Anda?
(Hello! My name is Ali. What is your name?)

Person 2: Halo, nama saya John. Saya dari Amerika.


(Hello, my name is John. I am from America.)

Person 1: Apa pekerjaan Anda, John?


(What is your job, John?)

Person 2: Saya seorang insinyur.


(I am an engineer.)

Person 1: Senang bertemu dengan Anda, John!


(Nice to meet you, John!)
Person 2: Senang bertemu dengan Anda juga! Sampai jumpa!
(Nice to meet you too! See you!)

 Apa = What (Asks about the action, event, or subject itself.)

 Mengapa = Why (Explores the reason or cause behind the event.)
 Bagaimana= How (Asks for the method, manner, or process by which something
happened.)
 Berapa = How Much/How Many/How Older
 Saya = I (Formal)
 Aku = I ( Informal)
 Anda = You ( Formal)
 Kamu = You (Informal)
 Nama = Name

 Dari Mana = Where are
 Seorang = a or an
 Dokter = Doctor
 Guru = Teacher
 Kantor = Office
 Pekerjaan = Job
 Selamat Tinggal = Goodbye
