Recently I had a conversation with my manager in his office.
The physical context would've
been his office which felt very unwelcoming. The room was cold, lights uncomfortably bright, the
desk we were sitting at was small and the chairs we were in were too small for either of us.
Physiological context would be the stress both of us were under after a really bad weekend on
my mental state and for him a bad weekend because we were understaffed and he was
stressed out trying to cover so many positions by himself. For cultural context we are both men
however he is in his 40’s while I am just under 20 years old so he’s double my age, along with
this he is african american while I am white. For relational context we are both on really good
terms and he appreciates the work and me a lot, he is an amazing manager so I feel the same
about him. We’re both familiar with each other and our lives so there is sort of an unspoken
understanding between us about most things, though of course it is a professional environment
so we keep a lot of initial social norms in our conversations. This leads into social context as at
the end of the day he is my boss and I have to obey certain social norms whether that be
staying in uniform while at work or not swearing in front of him. A better awareness of the social
context would’ve helped the both of us in that conversation. While there were other factors at
play my lack of awareness with what I could and could not say made it difficult to communicate
and his lack of awareness made it hard for him to convey the point he was trying to make.
